LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati track and field program took full advantage of a sunny spring day in Louisville on Saturday as the Bearcats continued their assault on the school record book while posting numerous top marks at the Lyle/Wood Invitational on the University of Louisville campus. The three day event, which began Friday night and runs through the completion of the multi-events Sunday, saw many Bearcats shine as six school records were reset on the women's side and 11 total events won.
Overall, the women recorded 40 personal-best marks while winning eight events and placing among the Top 3 a total of 12 more times while the men posted 23 PR's while winning a trio of events and scoring five more Top 3 showings. Kenya Woodall (100m dash), Annette Echikunwoke (hammer), Rebecka Abrahamsson (triple jump) and Kellsa Mbah (long jump) each climbed to the top of the UC charts in their respective events while rookie Haisha Bisiolu took down the UC freshman marks in both the 100m and 200m events.
// WOMEN'S RESULTS
- The meet opened on Friday with the hammer throw competition that saw Echikunwoke break her own school record in the event by the slimmest of margins, tossing the ball to 60.38m (198-01), bettering her mark from the Tiger Track Classic two weeks ago by 1cm (60.37m). One of five Bearcats in the event, Echikunwoke was joined by Leah Heckaman (52.39m/171-10) and Alexis Gray (41.68m/136-09) in setting PR's.
- Woodall continues to lower her times and rewrite the record books, this time taking on the 100m dash as she posted the fastest preliminary time in 11.62, which was a new PR, before she won the event in 11.53, tying Natasha Burse (2011) for the top time in UC history. Woodall, who also set a meet record with both of her runs, ranks among the Top 5 in the conference in the event along with being No. 2 in both the 200m and 400m. Woodall also competed in the 200m dash, running 23.65 to take second overall and first among collegiate runners in the event.
- Bisiolu also found a great deal of success in the short sprints as she took second to Woodall in the 100m dash, turning in a time of 11.74, which ranks seventh all-time in UC history and breaks the freshman record of 11.77 run by Burse in 2008. In the same event, Alanna Hendricks clocked in at 12.03 to take fourth place and the No. 10 position all-time in UC history.
- Bisiolu was not done, however, as she clocked in at 23.78 in the 200m dash, finishing third overall (second among collegiate entries) to post the fourth-fastest time in UC history and break another freshman record. Once again, Bisiolu trumped Burse's previous record of 24.08 while becoming just the fifth Bearcat woman to run a sub-24 in the event.
- Abrahamsson saved her best for last in the triple jump as her final two marks would have bettered her own record. Entering the competition with a best of 12.92m, Abrahamsson jumped to 12.97m on her fifth attempt before closing out the competition with a huge PR of 13.21m (43-04.25), bettering her previous best by nearly one foot. Her mark now also ranks her fourth in the nation, just 4cm off the lead.
- The last time the Bearcats competed (two weeks ago in Auburn), the long jump record was taken down by Abrahamsson. Today, however, the third name in as many weeks has occupied the top spot, this time reading Kellsa Mbah after she jumped 6.24m (20-05.75) to finish second overall. Now the conference leader, Mbah is just the third UC woman to jump over 20' in the event.
- Bryana Robinson had another solid day in the sprints, too, as she won the 400m dash in 54.19 and took fifth in the 200m dash in 24.43. Her quarter time, which is a meet record, ranks her fourth all-time in UC history while her 200m time stands as the ninth-best all-time at UC.
- Staying with the sprints, the 100m hurdles competition was very UC-heavy as the trio of Javette Lee, Aliya Barnes and Je'Rica Sanders went 1-2-3 in the preliminary round with Lee (13.74) and Barnes (13.78) turning in the No. 5 and No. 7, respectively, all-time UC marks in the event. In the finals, Barnes took the title, this time running 13.49 to record the No. 3 mark in UC history, break the meet record and tie for the fastest time in the American Athletic Conference so far this year. Lee, who ran 13.61 in the finals, moved up to No. 4 in UC history with that time.
- In the 4x100m relay, the team of Lee, Bisiolu, B. Robinson and Woodall combined to run 45.37 to win the race and post the fifth-fastest time in UC history. That time also stands third overall in the conference right now.
- Alyssa McBride cleared another PR in the pole vault, this time moving to No. 2 all-time in UC history as she cleared 4.20m (13-09.25) to take third in the event. Her mark, which is only the second time a Bearcat woman has surpassed 4.20m or better, is now second in the conference.
- Sammy Hentz blasted her previous PR in the 800m run, lowering it by nearly 10 seconds as she posted a time of 2:14.76, which gave her runner-up honors in the race.
- Emma Hensley ran 10:30.39 to finish ninth in the 3,000m run while also posting the ninth-fastest time in UC history.
- The final Top 10 mark recorded on the day came in the discus as Heckaman threw the disc to 45.37m (148-10), which is No. 8 in UC history.
// MEN'S RESULTS
- Just like on the women's side, the men's horizontal jumpers had an outstanding day as both Sergio Acera Villanueva and Tariq Sanders moved up in the all-time standings in the long jump and triple jump, respectively, following their competitions. In the long jump, Acera won the event as he posted a leap of 7.52m (24-08.25) to improve his PR by nearly five inches and moving up to No. 7 in UC history. Sanders, who took sixth in the long jump, brought home the win in the triple jump competition, bouncing his way to a mark of 14.81m (48-07.25) and improving his PR by 6.5". His result pushed him to No. 5 all-time in UC history.
- Adrian Valles won the pole vault competition and improved his season best, this time clearing 5.41m (17-09.00) to extend his lead in the American Athletic Conference standings while also moving into the Top 10 nationally.
- Tevin-Lloyd Thompson posted several strong times in the sprints as he took sixth in the 100m dash (10.71) and third in the 200m dash (21.68) to lead the way. In that same 200m event, five other Bearcats competed with all five - Jimmy Brooks, Jeyson Jones, Khalid Fuller, Halen Witcher and Kelvin Williams - each posting PR's.
- Williams was not done, however, as he ran a pair of PR's in the 110m hurdles. In the preliminary round, he lowered his PR to 14.88 before placing sixth in the finals with another PR, this time running 14.59.
- The team of Ryan Greene (50.1), Brooks (47.4), Jaashir Morris (49.4) and Nathan Smith (48.3) combined to run 3:15.54 to place third in the 4x400m relay, a season-best. Brooks earlier took second in the open 400m (47.37) while Smith ran a PR of 49.11. Witcher also turned in a PR in the same race, running 48.90.
- In the 1,500m run, three Bearcats turned in PR's, led by Ian Silver, who ran 3:59.37. One of two UC runners under 4-minutes on the day with Seamus Collins (3:54.59), Silver was joined on the PR list by Jarrod Hart (4:08.13) and Jacob Franklin (4:17.84).
- The decathlon got underway on Saturday with Alex Bloom sitting second overall with 3,547 points, just 22 points off his PR. He will have five events more on Sunday after posting PR's in two of the individual decathlon events on Saturday (100m, shot put).
The heptathlon and decathlon will wrap up competition on Sunday to close out the week's competition. Next up for UC will be a trip to Philadelphia and the 121st Penn Relays April 28-30.
