ORLANDO, Fla. - The second day of action at the 2016 American Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close Friday in Orlando, Fla., with the University of Cincinnati once again enjoying a solid day of competition, including a pair of school records and two more all-conference honors. The meet, which is being held at the UCF Soccer and Track & Field Complex, featured several outstanding performances from the Bearcats, including both Kenya Woodall (200m) and Javette Lee (400m hurdles) resetting the school record in their respective events while five other women and a trio of men each placed among the Top 8 in their events to collect points in the team race.
In the team races, both programs remained among the Top 5 in the standings following the second day of action. On the women's side, the Bearcats are currently third overall with 29 points - tied with host UCF - while East Carolina (38) and Memphis (33) lead the way. On the men's side, UC has tallied 21 points and sits fourth while the Top 3 is held by UConn (37), Memphis (26) and Tulsa (23).
// WOMEN'S RESULTS
- In the preliminary round of the 200m dash, Woodall won her heat in 23.32 to post the second-fastest time of the day while freshman Haisha Bisiolu raced to a time of 23.84, which placed her ninth overall, one spot outside of qualifying for the final. For Woodall, her time moved her into the top spot in UC history, bettering the 23.37 run by Charlyn Ray in 2002. Woodall's record also is the third she has collected in an individual sprinting event outdoors in her career as she broke the 100m record earlier this year (11.53) and posted the all-time best in the 400m dash last year (51.78).
- UC's second school record of the day came from Lee, who was able to finish her quest of breaking 60 seconds in the event, posting the second-fastest time of the day in 59.13 to break the school record of 1:00.43 that Amanda Klug ran in 2003. Lee, who now is the first Bearcat woman to run under 60 seconds in school history, will run for her first conference title on Sunday.
- In the first final of the day, the women's pole vault had three entrants with a pair of Bearcats placing in the Top 6 to score team points. Leading the way was Alyssa McBride, who cleared 4.15m (13-07.25) to take runner-up honors and giving her a pair of Top 3 placements in the conference meets after placing third indoors. Along with her eight team points, freshman Brooke Catherine added three more as she finished sixth overall after clearing a best of 3.95m (12-11.50) on the day. Fellow rookie Sadie Brass also competed in the event, tying for 15th with a best of 3.50m (11-05.75).
- Entering the discus competition, the Bearcats were not projected to score in the Top 8 based on season bests, but that did not hold back Leah Heckaman, who launched a career-best 47.19m (154-10) to finish eighth overall and record the fifth-best mark in UC history. Nicole Breeden (42.87m/140-08), Alexis Gray (40.19m/131-10) and Annette Echikunwoke (39.72m/130-04) also competed in the event, finishing 12th, 14th and 18th, respectively.
- Both Naomi Urbano and Maggie Loeffler grabbed team points with their finishes in the heptathlon, including the rookie Urbano scoring 4,457 points overall to take sixth place and score three team points after posting the 10th-best score in school history. Loeffler, who placed eighth overall with a score of 3,868 points to grab one point for the team. On the day, Urbano recorded two personal-bests, both of which ranked among the program's heptathlon Top 10, including the No. 10 long jump mark (5.33m/17-06.00) and the No. 9 Day Two score (1,809 points). Loeffler continued to battle throughout the day, finishing eighth in a pair of events on the final day to ensure adding a team point to the Bearcats' total.
- In the first preliminary round race of the night, Alexis Anton raced in the 800m event, finishing with a personal-best time of 2:10.87 to place 11th overall. Although she did not advance to the final, she did run a PR for the second time this season and moved up to No. 4 on the school's all-time Top 10 chart.
// MEN'S RESULTS
- The two-day, 10-event decathlon came to a close with Alex Bloom using a PR in the pole vault (4.55m/14-11.00) to tie for first in the event and ensure a Top 3 finish as his 6,566 point total placed him third in the competition and add sixth points to the team total while also earning all-conference honors. Bloom placed fifth in the 110m hurdles to open the day and then placed fourth in the 1,500m run to close out the competition. Also, Ben Wollenslegel took part in the event and battled through an injury to finish the decathlon with 4,381 points to place eighth overall to grab one team point in the process. Wollenslegel scored a pair of event PR's, including the 110m hurdles (16.57) and the discus (27.68m/90-10).
- The first final of the day for the men came in the discus with Josh Province finishing sixth overall to add three more points to the team total one day after finishing third in the hammer one day earlier. Province, who entered the meet ranked eighth in the league, launched a personal-best toss of 51.16m (167-10) to move up the standings and take over the No. 9 position on UC's all-time Top 10 list. John Zedella also competed in the event, tossing the disc to 43.14m (141-06) to place 16th overall.
- Jaashir Morris took part in the 400m hurdles and raced to a personal-best time of 53.33 to finish eight overall and take the final qualifying position to the finals. That time also ranks No. 11 all-time in UC history. Nathan Smith also competed in the event and ran 55.65 to finish 14th overall in just his third time running the event.
- In the 200m dash, Jimmy Brooks turned in another PR as he ran 21.44 to tie for 11th overall in the preliminary round while Tevin-Lloyd Thompson taking 18th in 22.13. Neither man was able to crack into the Top 8, which was the qualifying cut-off to make the finals.
- Jarrod Hart took part in the preliminary round of the 800m run and posted a personal-best time of 1:52.59 and breaking under 1:53 for the first time in his career. With that time, Hart placed 13th overall and did not advance to the final as only the Top 8 moved on to the final Sunday.
Day Three of the conference competition will take place Saturday with six finals in the field events (men's pole vault, men's and women's javelin, men's and women's long jump and the men's high jump), as well as the 3,000m steeplechase on the track. Prior to the distance race, the preliminary rounds of the following events will be contested: 1,500m run, 100m/110m hurdles, 400m dash and 100m dash.
