T&F: Valles' Season Comes to an End at NCAA Championships

June 8, 2016

EUGENE, Ore. - The first day of competition at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close for the University of Cincinnati Wednesday evening at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., with sophomore Adrian Valles taking part in the finals of the men's pole vault competition. Unfortunately, Valles was unable to clear a bar and did not place in the event, capping his collegiate season and the 2015-16 schedule for the UC men's program.

Valles had three attempts at the opening height of 5.15m (16-10.25), nearly cleaning on all three, before falling out of the meet. Despite the finish in Oregon, Valles still had a sensational season as he successfully defended his American Athletic Conference pole vault titles at the indoor and outdoor championships before advancing to both national meets for the second year in a row. The school record holder both indoors and out, Valles will be back next season looking to build upon his titles and three All-America honors.

"Despite the result today, he is still a champion," said head coach Susan Seaton. "Adrian will bounce back from this meet. He has a big summer ahead of him with several meets scheduled, including the European Championships, and possibly more. I know he will rebound and remain focused on the future ahead."

The women will have their turn to compete Thursday with a trio of Bearcats set to appear. Annette Echikunwoke will lead off the day for UC with the hammer throw starting at 2 p.m. local (5 p.m. ET) before Alyssa McBride enters the pole vault finals at 5 p.m. local (8 p.m. ET). The day concludes with Kenya Woodall taking part in the semifinal round of the 400m dash with the event slated to begin at 6 p.m. local (9 p.m. ET). All the action can viewed via the WatchESPN (ESPN3) app while ESPN will carry action starting at 8 p.m. ET.
