LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team added another award to its successful 2015 campaign, earning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award ad announced by the organization on Monday.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
The AVCA honored 131 Division I women's teams this season, less than half of NCAA DI participants. A total of 762 teams won the award this year, spanning all men's and women's collegiate teams as well as high school and beach volleyball teams.
"I am proud of this team for working hard in the classroom and am excited to see them earn the recognition they deserve for it" said head coach Molly Alvey. "We believe how we perform in the classroom will be a reflection of how we perform on the court and therefore tend to our academic requirements with the same energy and effort as our athletic responsibilities. This is just one more example of the thriving culture our team has worked so hard to establish at UC."
The Bearcats recorded a cumulative GPA of a 3.357 during the 2015-16 academic year with Lise Alaiwan (Villeneuve Loubet, France/Kedge Business School), Morgan Allred (Carrolton, Texas/Hebron), Lindsey Dinkelacker (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Louis), Emma Roberson (Brooks, Ky./Evansville), Parker Shepherd (McKinney, Texas/ McKinney Boyd) and Jordan Thompson (Edina, Minn./Edina) all recording GPAs of 3.7 or higher for the year. Additionally, Roberson became just the second UC volleyball player to earn First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
