University of Cincinnati sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) posted a second-round career-best 4-under par 68 to climb into a tie for 14th place at 3-under 73-68=141 after the first day of the Invitational at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
Squires is tied with eight other players, seven strokes behind tournament leaders Jake Marriott of Augusta (10-under 66-68=134) and Alexander Hermann of Georgia State (10-under 66-68=134).
Squires carded five birdies during the afternoon's second round, including three over the last six holes. He posted a par score on 12 other holes during the round.
"Austin is becoming more confident as a player and it is showing," UC men's golf head coach Doug Martin said. "He's learning how to set up a game plan and execute it. Plus, the difference in his maturity from his freshman to sophomore season is off the charts."
Freshman Jake Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School) performed well to start his first collegiate tournament, earning a 1-over 73-72=145 to tie for 47th place after two rounds.
Overall, the Bearcats have posted a two-round 9-over 295-290=585 and are tied with South Alabama (293-292=585) for 13th place. Middle Tennessee leads the 16-team field at 20-under 281-275=556.
"We weren't able to get a low score during the first round and didn't get a fourth low score during the afternoon round," Martin said. "You've got to do those things to have a chance against a field like this that features 14 teams listed inside the top 100. But I'm pleased with some individual performances today."
