University of Cincinnati sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) recorded a career-best finish, tying for fourth place at 6-under par 73-68-69=210 during final-round action Tuesday at the Invitational at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
Squires tied Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss (6-under 68-72-70=210), three strokes behind tournament medalist Jake Marriott of Augusta (9-under 66-68-73=207) in Cincinnati's fall season tournament opener.
Squires' previous top finish came last fall at the Fossum Memorial (Oct. 6, 2015) when he took eighth place after carding an even par 74-73-69=216.
"Austin had a great week," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He's starting to figure out the plays to make and how to take advantage of certain situations. He was very sharp on a very difficult course."
UC freshman Jake Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School) finished second among Bearcats golfers, registering a 1-over 73-72-72=217 to tie seven other players for 25th place. He tallied three birdies and 12 par scores Tuesday.
"For his first collegiate tournament, I thought Jake put together a solid performance," Martin said. "It's a great start to his career."
As a squad, the Bearcats posted one of the best team rounds of the day at 2-over 290 to finish the 16-team event in 12th place at 11-over 295-290-290=875. Middle Tennessee claimed the team title at 14-under 281-275-294=850.
"I thought we stayed in the process and didn't get ahead of ourselves today," Martin said. "The course was the toughest it's been all week, but we shot our best round of the tournament. We still didn't get a fourth score today. That's something we've got to improve upon in order to play at the next level."
