University of Cincinnati sophomore Paul Huber (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) carded a career-best 2-under par 70 Sunday to grab a share of the lead after the opening round of the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at the Grove in College Grove, Tennessee.
The Bearcats are first in the team standings as well, posting a fall season-best even par 288, to rank two strokes ahead of second-place and tournament host, Middle Tennessee (2-over 290) after the first day.
Playing in his third collegiate tournament, Huber registered three of his four birdies over the final five holes and posted par scores on 12 other holes to tie Troy's Clay Vannoy (2-under 70) atop the leaderboard after the first round.
"Paul has been very consistent since the start of the fall," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He did a good job driving the ball and put together a very solid round."
Three other Bearcats posted scores that rank among the tournament's top 10. Sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) carded his third consecutive below-par round with a 1-under 71 Sunday to tie three other players for third place. Senior Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) and sophomore Scot Sapp (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington High School) recorded identical even par 72 scores to tie seven other players for seventh place. Sapp is playing the event as an individual. His scores do not count toward the Bearcats' team score.
"As a ball striker's course, this setting suits us well," Martin said. "We've got some guys who are growing more comfortable on the collegiate level and, as a result, we're developing more depth in our program. We've been talking for a while about the importance of having four to five scorers."
