University of Cincinnati senior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) carded a tournament-best 4-under par 68 Monday to climb 39 places into a tie for fourth at 1-under 75-68=143 after two rounds at the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at the Grove in College Grove, Tennessee.
O'Kelley birdied each of his final three holes, recorded five birdies and 12 par scores on the day and enters Tuesday's final round tied with Ole Miss' Ben Wolcott (1-under 72-71=143) for fourth place, three strokes behind tournament leader Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss (4-under 71-69=140).
"Jared was very patient and played well throughout today's round," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He hit three nice iron shots and made three putts from eight to 10 feet out over the last three holes to finish on a strong note."
Sophomore Paul Huber (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic), playing in his third collegiate tournament, slipped from first into a tie for seventh with a 2-over 74 on Monday. Huber (2-over 70-74=144) is tied with three other players entering Tuesday's action.
"Paul had an admirable round today," Martin said. "He finished up with bogies on his last two holes and is a bit disappointed, but at the end of the day, it's an experience that he will learn from and turn into a positive."
The Bearcats slipped from first to third in the team standings with a 7-over 295 on Monday. At 7-over 288-295=583 entering Tuesday, Cincinnati trails tournament leader Ole Miss (2-over 292-286=578) by five strokes and second-place College of Charleston (4-over 292-288=580) by three strokes. The 14-team field consists of nine squads that competed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
"We need to come out Tuesday with the mindset to attack," Martin said. "We came here with the intention of playing well and we've done that to this point."
Final-round action begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET with the Bearcats scheduled to tee off around 11:30 a.m. Follow the action at Golfstat.com.
