Bearcats Complete Comeback for 3-1 Win at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan.
-- The University of Cincinnati volleyball team dropped the first set but rallied for a 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 26-24) win over Wichita State in Wichita, Kansas, on Friday night. The sophomore quartet of Carly Nolan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South), Jordan Thompson (Edina, Minn./Edina), Jade Tingelhoff (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) and Abby Williams (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) took control of the match in the second game to help lead the comeback for the Bearcats.

Thompson notched her second double-double of the season, finishing with 25 kills and 12 digs, while Nolan recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and 16 digs. Tingelhoff compiled a match-high 43 assists while Williams added 16 digs.

// NOTABLES
- Cincinnati moved to 3-1 on the year while Wichita State fell to 1-2. The match was played in front of over 2,000 fans at Charles Koch Arena and was streamed live on ESPN3.
- The Shockers are receiving votes in the AVCA Top-25 Coaches poll.
- Sophomore Jordan Thompson (Edina, Minn./Edina) recorded 25 kills, two shy of her career high, and has finished with double-digit kills in each match this season. Additionally, she hit at a .316 clip with only seven errors in 57 attempts.
- Nolan's double-double comes on the heels of her breakout freshman campaign in 2015 when she recorded 12 double-doubles for the Bearcats.
- Senior Ciara Hill (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) added a season-high 10 kills after recording nine apiece in the last two matches.
- The teams shared 27 service errors between them to only eight service aces.
- Cincinnati held Wichita State to a .169 attacking percentage, marking the third straight match it has kept its opponent below the .200 mark.
- It is the second time in four matches that the Bearcats have dropped the first set but won the final three for a 3-1 victory. The team also beat Middle Tennessee State by the same fashion on Aug. 27.

// ALVEY'S ADDITIONS
"That was a very good team that we played tonight" said head coach Molly Alvey. "It was an incredibly competitive match from both teams but I thought we made some great adjustments after the first set that really changed the match for us. The fourth set was amazing how we were able to stay disciplined while trailing and come back to get the win. We had people making big plays for us from every position, and all around, the players got their jobs done tonight."

// SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: WSU 25, UC 19

- A pair of early kills by sophomore Nolan brought UC within 3-2 but the Bearcats remained two or three points behind the Shockers for the majority of the game.
- Back-to-back kills by WSU's Katy Dudzinski pushed the home team to a 13-9 lead and forced head coach Molly Alvey into her first timeout of the match to reorganize her team.
- Wichita State extended its lead to 19-13 with three straight kills by Tabitha Brown and Jody Larson (two).
- The Bearcats fought off three WSU set points with a service error and back-to-back overpass kills by junior Maya Muldrow (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield), but the Shockers scored on a block out of a timeout to win the first game 25-19.
Set 2: UC 25, WSU 22
- A Thompson kill gave the Bearcats a 5-2 advantage but the Shockers responded with four straight points, including two service aces, to go ahead 6-5 in the early goings.
- Cincinnati finally found a rhythm and pounced for three straight points for a 15-11 lead. Thompson and senior Lise Alaiwan (Villeneuve Loubet, France/Kedge Business School) each recorded a kill in the run for the Bearcats.
- An attacking error by Wichita State and a powerful kill from Thompson gave the Bearcats a 21-16 lead and forced a WSU timeout. The Shockers responded with three points out of the break, however, to bring the score within 22-19.
- The teams traded timeouts to close the set before a WSU service error gave UC a 25-22 win to tie the match at 1-1.
Set 3: UC 25, WSU 21
- Muldrow, Hill and Thompson registered three straight kills for the Bearcats to give the visitors a 5-2 lead.
- Cincinnati raced to the media timeout with a 15-9 lead after kills by Nolan and Muldrow and a Muldrow/Thompson block.
- The Shockers rallied with four straight points to get within 19-15 but the Bearcats answered with a three-point scoring run, including a kill by Nolan and a solo block by Hill, for a 23-16 UC lead.
- WSU forced a Cincinnati timeout after two straight kills but Thompson's 17th kill of the match closed it out for a 25-21 UC win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4: UC 26, WSU 24
- Cincinnati used a four-point scoring run to go ahead 6-5. A Thompson kill got the run started while Hill added a pair of kills for the Bearcats.
- UC held an 11-9 lead but the Shockers regrouped for four straight points to go ahead 13-11. The Bearcats wasted no time to answer, however, using two WSU errors and a block by Thompson and Muldrow for a 14-13 advantage.
- The Bearcats held a slim 15-14 lead at the media timeout but the Shockers scored five of the next six points for a 19-16 advantage and a Cincinnati timeout.
- Hill led the Bearcats out of the break with a kill and a service ace to help UC tie the score back at 19-19 and force the Shockers into a timeout of their own.
- Cincinnati faced a WSU set point at 24-22 but Thompson hammered a pair of kills to tie the score at 24-all. The Shockers called a timeout but to no avail as a WSU attacking error and Thompson's 25th kill of the match gave UC the 26-24 win to complete the victory over Wichita State.

Cincinnati continues play at the Shockers Volleyball Classic with a pair of matches on Saturday, Sept. 3. The Bearcats will face Marquette at 11 a.m. ET before matching up with IUPUI at 6 p.m. ET. Like Wichita State, Marquette also is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top-25 Coaches poll.
