CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) recorded back-to-back 1-under par 70 scores to tie for fourth place at 2-under 70-70=140 after the first day of the Bearcat Invitational at Coldstream Country Club (par 71, 7,150 yards).
Squires posted 11 birdies and 16 par scores in the two rounds combined. He is tied with Middle Tennessee's Marcus Byrd (2-under 68-72=140), four strokes behind tournament co-leaders Sam Weatherhead of Michigan State (70-66=136) and Will Grimmer of Ohio State (69-67=136), who both carded 6-under par scores after 36 holes.
Fellow Bearcat, freshman Jake Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School) registered a career-best 4-under 67 during the afternoon round and sits one stroke behind Squires and Byrd at 1-under 74-67=141.
UC senior Jared O'Kelley (6-over 75-73=148) and sophomore Paul Huber (6-over 75-73=148) shot identical first and second round scores to tie four other players for 29th place entering Tuesday's final round.
As a team, the Bearcats shaved 10 strokes off their first-round score to climb into fourth place at 8-over 293-283=576. Michigan State leads the 10-team field after recording a 2-under 285-281=566 through two rounds. The Spartans lead Big Ten Conference rival Ohio State (1-under 287-280=567) by one stroke. The College of Charleston is third at even par 288-280=568.
"We didn't do a very good job of handling the rainy weather in the morning. We had a poor stretch of holes that hurt us but we bounced back this afternoon led by Jake Fox and Austin Squires," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "I'm pleased with where we are but there's a lot of golf to be played."
Final-round action starts Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET. The Bearcats are schedule to start from the first tee at 9:10 a.m.
