CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati cross country program sent four teams of competitors to the starting line at the All-Ohio Cross Country Championships in Cedarville, Ohio, Friday afternoon with both the men's championship team placing third overall and the women's side finishing sixth among over 40 teams from around the state. The Bearcats, which also send full teams to compete in the open races, placed second in both of those competitions in the event held on the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course on the Cedarville University campus.
// MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP 8,000m
The second race of the day was the 62nd running of the men's championship with the Bearcats placing third overall in a field of 42 teams. The Bearcats scored 101 points to place third overall while Ohio State (91) and Dayton (96) finished just ahead of UC and Miami (105) and Ohio (119) rounding out the Top 5 - a spread of just 28 points separating first from fifth. In the Division I standings (eight teams), the spread was similarly small with OSU (58), UD (61), UC (65) and MU (69) being separated by just 11 points.
Individually, Toby Loveridge led the charge for the men as he finished eighth overall by covering the 8,000m course in 25:27.5. That placement marked just the seventh time he has raced in the sport and the fifth time he has placed in the Top 8, a career that includes three seventh-place finishes and two eighth-place showings.
Loveridge was followed across the line by Anthony Car, who was 13th in 25:39.7; Seamus Collins in 20th (25:49.2); Dan Huben in 23rd (25:54.5) and Nick Grismer in 38th (26:07.5), who rounded out the team's scoring five positions. Spencer Clark also competed in the race, finishing 91st in 27:00.3. Two of the Bearcats in the race posted the best place finishes of their careers, including Collins (previous best was 24th) and Grismer (54th). Overall, 287 men finished the race.
// WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP 6,000m
The 32nd annual women's championship opened up the day with the UC women finishing sixth overall and fifth among Division I schools. Overall, MU took the top spot with 59 points and were followed in the Top 6 by UD (71), Cedarville (79), OSU (112), Wright State (165) and the Bearcats (187). In the Division I standings, the Top 5 were MU (42), UD (47), OSU (68), WSU (100) and UC (116).
In the individual standings, Juliana Madzia led the way for the Bearcats as she finished 11th overall in 22:07.4. That finish equaled her career-best placement (also was 11th at the 2015 Queen City Invitational) and saw her nearly dip under 22 minutes for the first time in her career. Madzia was not the only sub-23 finisher on the day as freshman Marina Wrede ran 22:58.9 to place 38th overall.
The Top 5 scorers came across the line close together with Meg Westerheide placing 43rd (23:03.4), Grace O'Donnell at 47th (23:05.6) and Lianne Masquelier in 52nd (23:09.8), a spread of just over six seconds. The Bearcats also saw two other women finish the race, including Hannah Christ, who was 83rd in 23:37.8, and Tessa Ward, who placed 97th at 23:56.2.
// WOMEN'S OPEN 6,000m
The Bearcats sent seven to the starting line of the women's open 6,000m run and saw the scoring five athletes all place in the Top 25 to help UC to runner-up honors. MU won the title with 22 points with UC (57), Cedarville (87), Akron (156) and UD (164) rounding out the Top 5.
Individually, Emma Hensley was the top Bearcats finisher as she posted her first career Top 10 finish as she cross the line in 23:44.5 to place seventh overall. Her previous best placement in a 6,000m race was 40th heading into today's competition. Behind Hensley were two Top 15 finishers in Cassidy Carey, who was 13th in 23:56.6, and Alexis Anton, who was 15th in 23:59.1. Sammy Hentz, who was 24th, rounded out the team's five scoring positions as she ran 24:48.5 to place 24th. Madison Dunlap (29th, 25:02.3) and Hannah Markel (36th, 25:17.3) also competed in the race.
// MEN'S OPEN 8,000m
The final race of the day was the open division 8,000m race for the men which saw a pair of Top 25 individual finishes to lead the Bearcats to ninth-place team showing (of 23 teams). MU won the team title with 20 points and was followed in the Top 5 by UD (76), Walsh (119), OSU (183) and OU (209). UC scored 247 points.
Individually, Michael Vitucci led the way as he placed 16th overall in 26:57.8. John Murdock also posted a Top 25 finish as he ran 27:14.7 to place 22nd overall. The scoring five was rounded out by Austin Angeline (48th, 27:45.9), Joshua DeJesus (84th, 28:23.9) and Frank Pierce (143rd, 29:20.7). Jake Barnes also competed, finishing 155th in 29:35.8.
Following one weekend off, the Bearcats will return to competition on Saturday, October 15, as they travel to Terre Haute for the 2016 adidas Pre-National Invitational. The meet will be conducted on the Lavern Gibson Championship Course, which also will serve as the host venue for the 2016 NCAA Championships later in November.
