BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to ranked teams on Friday at the Holiday Inn University Plaza Invitational in Bowling Green, Kentucky. UC fell to Michigan State, the first team receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches' Poll, to open the tournament before dropping a decision to No. 23 Western Kentucky on its home floor in the nightcap.
// NOTABLES
- Cincinnati fell to 4-4 on the year after losing to MSU 3-0 (15-25, 15-25, 16-25) and to WKU 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 20-25).
- The Bearcats have played four teams either receiving votes or ranked in their last five matches.
- After recording double-digit kill totals in the first six matches of the season, sophomore Jordan Thompson (Edina, Minn./Edina) was held to just eight kills in each match today.
- Cincinnati recorded a season-low 12 attacking errors in the match vs. Western Kentucky.
- Sophomore Jade Tingelhoff (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) finished one dig shy of a double-double against Michigan State with 23 assists and nine digs. The setter added 18 assists and seven digs against Western Kentucky.
// UC vs. MSU SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: MSU 25, UC 15
- Cincinnati used a solo block by sophomore Tingelhoff to get within 9-6 but a six-point Spartans run buried the Bearcats at 15-6.
- The Bearcats couldn't get within eight points the rest of the way and dropped the game 25-15.
Set 2: MSU 25, UC 15
- The second game opened in the same fashion as the first, with a 12-3 MSU lead and a UC timeout.
- Sophomore Carly Nolan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) scored on a pair of kills to get UC within 18-6 and then a three-point UC scoring run slimmed the MSU lead to 19-9.
- MSU hit .423 in the second game on its way to another 25-15 win to take a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3: MSU 25, UC 16
- A service ace by redshirt senior Alison Kimmel (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) and an attacking error by the Spartans got the Bearcats within 9-7 in the third game.
- Two UC points, including a kill by junior Maya Muldrow (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) pulled the Bearcats within 14-10, but Michigan State responded with three straight points for a 17-10 advantage.
- MSU closed out the game with a kill and a block to sweep the match 3-0.
// UC vs. WKU SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: WKU 25, UC 14
- Cincinnati and Western Kentucky traded long rallies in the opening points until three straight kills gave the Hilltoppers a 10-5 lead.
- WKU scored in bunches of three to go ahead 16-10 and 24-13 before winning 25-14.
- The Bearcats managed to score more than one point at a time only once in the game.
Set 2: WKU 25, UC 19
- A Nolan kill got UC on the board first but the Hilltoppers responded with the next seven points to force a Cincinnati timeout.
- The Bearcats clawed their way back in the set and back-to-back aces by senior Lindsey Dinkelacker got them within a point at 9-8.
- Consecutive kills by Nolan tied the score at 12-12 but WKU answered with six of the next seven points for an 18-13 lead and a Cincinnati timeout.
- UC tried to spark a run with back-to-back kills by Thompson out of the timeout, but the Hilltoppers kept the Bearcats at bay, winning 25-19 off a kill and a block.
Set 3: WKU 25, UC 20
- Cincinnati was forced into a timeout down 7-2 but got within 10-9 with the help of several WKU errors.
- Consecutive kills by Nolan and Thompson tied the game at 19-19 but Western Kentucky responded with two kills of its own for a 21-19 lead and a Cincinnati timeout.
- Out of the break, WKU scored four of the final five points to win the game 25-20 and the match 3-0.
