A trio of University of Cincinnati men's golfers has guided the Bearcats into second place near the end of the second round of the Mountaineer Intercollegiate at the Pete Dye Golf Club (Par 72, 7,353) in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
The event's first round was delayed an hour due to fog before second-round action was suspended due to darkness with about four holes remaining. Second-round action resumes Tuesday at 9 a.m. ET with third-round play to follow.
UC sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) leads the Bearcats' effort, tying for second place at 5-under through 14 holes in the second round. Senior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) and freshman Jake Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School) are tied for ninth place at 2-under through 14 holes. Patrick Flavin of Miami (Ohio) leads the tournament at 7-under through 15 holes.
O'Kelley and Squires posted opening-round 69s to tie three other players for second place at 3-under after the morning round. Fox was tied with four other players after first-round play at 1-under 71. Flavin held the lead after 18 holes at 4-under 68.
The Bearcats were tied with Mississippi State at even par for second place when second-round play was suspended. Arkansas leads the 14-team event at 7-under with five holes remaining in the second round.
UC led after the morning round, posting a 1-over 289. Arkansas was second at 2-over 290.
"We're happy to be in second place with a chance to compete on Tuesday," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "We had three guys hold the team together. O'Kelley and Squires were solid and Fox continues to show up to play.
"Today was the first time all season we've had to count an 80 in the team score," Martin said. "And the squad understands that when we're trying to beat highly respected programs like Arkansas, we need four really good scores."
