TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati cross country program traveled west to Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday afternoon as the Bearcats competed in four of the six races at the 2016 adidas Pre-National Invitational at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, the site of the 2016 NCAA Championships. The meet, UC's final competition before the conference championships in two weeks, saw the men finish third overall in their division while the women were 21st in theirs.
Overall, Juliana Madzia paced the women as she broke 22 minutes in the race for the first time in her career and Toby Loveridge was the top men's finisher as he was one of two UC runners to place among the Top 20 on the day. For the men, it marks the second event in a row in which they placed third overall after earning the bronze placement at the All-Ohio Championships two weeks prior.
// WOMEN'S 6,000m - WHITE
The first race of the day involving UC runners was the women's white 6,000m race that saw Juliana Madzia race under 22 minutes for the first time in her career at that distance, running 21:58.1, to finish 32nd overall. Hannah Chris (22:51.4) and Emma Hensley (23:03.7) both placed in the Top 100 as they finished 81st and 97th, respectively, while Grace O'Donnell (23:08.7) and Meg Westerheide (23:16.2) rounded out the scoring five UC with 102nd and 112th-place finishes, respectively. Marina Wrede also finished the race, running 23:38.5 to place 130th overall.
In the team standings, the Bearcats accumulated 419 points to finish 21st overall out of 25 teams in the event while Oregon State captured the team title with 114 points. The Top 5 was rounded out by Wake Forest (131), Nevada (166), Oakland (182) and UTEP (187).
// MEN'S 8,000m - WHITE
Toby Loveridge was the team's top finisher once again as both he and Dan Huben posted Top 25 finishes on the day to lead the Bearcats to a third-place team showing for the second meet in a row. Loveridge ran the 8,000m course in 25:17.0 to finish 17th overall while Huben covered the course in the 25:26.7 to claim 22nd overall. The Top 5 scorers were rounded out by Anthony Car (25:50.5), who was 39th; Nick Grismer (25:56.9), who was 45th; and Seamus Collins (26:08.3); who was 60th. Michael Vitucci (26:14.1) and Spencer Clark (26:27.6) also completed the race, finishing 64th and 79th, respectively.
In the team standings, the Bearcats scored 178 points to sit third overall among the 20 scoring teams while Ohio took the crown with 132 points. Miami (Ohio) was second with 159 points while Montana State (212) and Missouri-Kansas City (222) rounded out the Top 5.
// WOMEN'S 6,000m - OPEN
UC sent five women to the starting line of the open race, but only four were able to finish the race, leaving the Bearcats out of the team scoring. Despite that, Alexis Anton had a solid race, finishing 33rd overall in the 6,000m race as she ran 23:12.6, a time that would have placed her fourth among her teammates in the earlier race on the day. Anton was followed across the line by Tessa Ward (23:31.4) and Hannah Markel (23:34.5), both of whom placed in the Top 50 with their 47th and 50th-place showings, while Cassidy Carey was 72nd overall in 24:11.6 to round out the Bearcats runners in the race.
// MEN'S 8,000m - OPEN
A group of five Bearcats raced in the open division of the meet with John Murdock leading the way with his 48th-place finish as he covered the 8,000m course in 27:48.2. Frank Pierce was just behind Murdock in 50th place, running 27:50.1. Austin Angeline (28:37.3) and Joshua DeJesus (29:21.9) place in the Top 70 by finishing 62nd and 67th, respectively, while Jake Barnes was the final scorer, placing 73rd in 31:28.5.
Overall, as a team, the Bearcats placed fifth among the five teams that had enough runners to score as a team, accumulating 103 points overall. Miami (Ohio) won the open race title with 33 points while Dayton was just behind them with 37 points. Marquette (73) and Morehead State (79) were the remaining two teams in the standings.

Following one week off from competition, the Bearcats will return to Voice of America MetroPark in West Chester, Ohio, as they are set to play host to the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships. The meet will be held on Saturday, October 29, with the women's 6,000m race starting at 10 a.m. and the men's 8,000m race taking place at 10:50 a.m.
