Volleyball Rallies for Five-Set Victory at UCF

ORLANDO
-- After falling behind 2-1 in the match, the University of Cincinnati volleyball team rallied to win the final two sets and beat UCF 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8) on Thursday night in Orlando, Florida. The win secured a season sweep over the Knights after the Bearcats won 3-1 over UCF on Oct. 2 in Fifth Third Arena.

Four sophomores paced the Bearcats to the victory, led by Jordan Thompson (Edina, Minn./Edina) who hit a match-high 22 kills and added eight digs, four blocks and two assists. Carly Nolan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and Jade Tingelhoff (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) each finished with double-doubles while Abby Williams (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) matched a career high with 25 digs.

- Cincinnati improves to 14-8 on the year and 9-2 in The American while UCF falls to 17-7 and 7-4 in the league.
- The Bearcats jumped to 8-3 all-time against the Knights
- Nolan recorded her team-leading ninth double-double of the year with 13 kills and 15 digs. She also chipped in four blocks and a service ace.
- Tingelhoff dished out 54 assists to go along with 15 digs for her sixth double-double.
- Senior Lise Alaiwan (Villeneuve Loubet, France/Kedge Business School) tied a career-high with nine blocks while adding nine kills.
- Redshirt senior Alison Kimmel (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) contributed eight kills, nine digs and five blocks.
- Thompson has recorded double-digit kills in 19 matches this season while Nolan has reached the milestone on 15 occasions. Senior Ciara Hill (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) collected 16 kills and has finished with double-digit kills 12 times.
- Cincinnati had four players finish the match with double-digit digs for just the third time this season. Williams led the way with 25 while Nolan and Tingelhoff both added 15. Senior Lindsey Dinkelacker (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Louis) had 12 digs to round it out.
- UC did not commit a service error on the night, marking the first time this season it has been perfect on the serve. The last time the Bearcats recorded that feat was on Nov. 22, 2015 -- at UCF.
- The Bearcats held UCF to a .184 attacking percentage and are 14-3 this season when keeping their opponents below .250. It is the eighth time in the last nine matches UC has kept the other team under .250.

"We stayed tough tonight" said head coach Molly Alvey. "There were many times when any team could have given in. We stayed together and won together. The fifth set was an amazing show of a full team effort and I am very proud of them."

// SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: UC 25, UCF 22
- The Bearcats held a 9-6 lead before a four-point UCF scoring run gave the home team a 10-9 advantage.
- A four-point Cincinnati run that included a Dinkelacker ace and a block by Alaiwan and Tingelhoff sent the Bearcats back ahead 16-15.
- A Tingelhoff ace forced a timeout from the Knights and kills from Nolan and Thompson out of the break increased the UC lead to 22-17.
- A kill by Hill ended the first game with a 25-22 Cincinnati win.
Set 2: UCF 25, UC 23
- The Bearcats used a three-point scoring run with kills by Hill, Alaiwan andThompson to tie the score at 13-13.
- Five straight points by Cincinnati gave the visitors an 18-14 lead but the Knights answered with seven consecutive points to go back in front 21-18. A service error by UCF finally ended the damage for the Bearcats.
- The Knights gave themselves set point with a kill by Jale Hervey but then hit consecutive attacking errors to get UC within 24-22 and force a UCF timeout.
- Another UC point on a UCF error made it 24-23 before Hervey scored on a kill to tie the match at 1-1 at the intermission.
Set 3: UCF 25, UC 21
- The teams took turns scoring in bunches and back-to-back Cincinnati kills by Nolan and Alaiwan forced a UCF timeout with an 18-18 score.
- A block by Nolan and Kimmel tied the score at 21-21 but it was all Knights the rest of the way to finish the game 25-21.
Set 4: UC 25, UCF 20
- The Bearcats scored four consecutive points to rally for a 7-4 lead and force a UCF timeout.
- The lead ballooned to 13-7 after a UCF attacking error but the Knights scored two straight points to close the gap to 13-9.
- The UC lead grew to 20-13 after Thompson assisted on a kill by Hill and the Knights hit it into the net.
- UCF scored four of the next five points to get within 21-17 but a tip by Kimmel fell for a kill for a 22-17 Cincinnati lead.
- Thompson recorded back-to-back kills to finish the game and force a deciding fifth set.
Set 5: UC 15, UCF 8
- Cincinnati seized complete control in the opening moments of the fifth game, racing to a 5-1 lead and forcing a timeout.
- Out of the break, Thompson, Hill and Kimmel all scored on kills to increase the lead to 8-1.
- UCF got within 10-6 and pushed the Bearcats into a timeout but a UCF attacking error swung the momentum back to the visitors.
- Cincinnati scored the final two points on a kill by Thompson and a block by Thompson and Kimmel to win the game 15-8 and the match 3-2.
