CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) posted an even par 71-73=144 Saturday to tie for 13th place after the first day of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational at the Steelwood Country Club (par 72; 7,096 yards) in Loxley, Alabama.
O'Kelley's first-day performance was highlighted by nine birdies and 19 par scores.
UC sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) is two strokes behind O'Kelley, tied for 25th place at 73-73=146. Squires registered eight birdies and 18 par scores Saturday.
"Jared and Austin continue to prove themselves as solid, dependable players," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "They've worked very hard to get to that point. Even though they didn't have their best stuff today, they were still able to manage decent scores."
UC posted a 20-over 292-304=596 Saturday to tie Western Kentucky (307-289=596) for ninth place in the 11-team field. Kennesaw State carded an 18-under 278-280=558 on the first day to grab first place.
"We're continuing to suffer from the same unforced errors that have been bothering us for our last 54 holes," Martin said. "It's not characteristic of how we started the season and it's been frustrating to watch. But we've got 18 more holes to go in our fall season and we want to finish up on a positive note."
