HOUSTON - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team picked up four medals and broke three school records on the opening day of the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship on Wednesday evening at the Campus & Wellness Recreation Center Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston. // COMMONS-DISALLE's COMMENTS
"We had an outstanding start to the meet today" said head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle. "We broke three school records on Day 1 and won our first American championship relay. We need to keep this momentum going into tomorrow's prelim session to be able to put together another great day."
// WOMEN'S 800 FREESTYLE RELAY
Cincinnati earned its first-ever relay victory at The American Championship when the women's 800 freestyle relay team of junior Sara Wanasek (Burlington, Wis./Burlington, freshman Michaela Wheeler (Loami, Ill./Home-School), freshman Rocky Laabs (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and senior Jacqueline Keire (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) took gold in 7:10.07. It is the first-career conference win for Wanasek, Wheeler and Laabs and the ninth for Keire.
// MEN'S 3M DIVING
Sophomore Louis Hunt (Lakeside Park, Ky./Covington Catholic), the 2016 American champion in the men's platform diving competition, dazzled in the men's 3M diving event on Wednesday, scoring a 320.30 to earn a silver medal. The mark was good for his second NCAA Zone qualifying score of the season and the second-highest score of his career on the 3M board.
