HOUSTON - A pair of championship swims from senior Jacqueline Keire (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) highlighted a successful second day of competition for the University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team at the American Athletic Conference championship in Houston, Texas. After two days and eight events, the Bearcats women's team has surged to the top of the leaderboard with 235 points while the men currently sit in second with 292 points.
In all, UC swimmers collected six medals on Thursday, two each of gold, silver and bronze. Additionally, the Bearcats broke seven school records, recorded 10 NCAA B-cut times and set one new meet record.
// COMMONS-DISALLE's COMMENTS
"Today we capitalized on our prelim sessions and qualified individuals back for finals" said head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle. "The momentum is rolling and the team is working well together, but we are only halfway through so we need to stay focused and keep performing well each session."
// WOMEN'S 50 FREESTYLE
Keire picked up her first individual gold medal of the championship on Thursday, successfully defending her title in the women's 50 freestyle with a time of 22.19. Junior Lindsey Niehaus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Dayton), freshman Michaela Wheeler (Loami, Ill./Home-School), sophomore Katherine Gob (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) and Keire teamed up for a school-record time of 1:31.04 to earn just the second American relay championship in UC history.
