University of Cincinnati sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) stands tied for 11th place at 2-under par 71-71=142 Monday after the first two rounds of the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate in Mobile, Alabama.
The 54-hole event at the Magnolia Grove Golf Club (par 72, 7,150 yards) concludes Tuesday. It marks the first tournament of the spring season for the Bearcats.
Squires posted eight birdies and 23 par scores on the day. He has registered 12 below-par rounds since the start of the fall season.
Senior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) finished the second round two strokes behind Squires, tying for 20th place at even par 72-72=144. He posted three birdies and 30 par scores Monday.
"Austin had a solid day today," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "His play was a little sharper in the afternoon than it was in the morning but that's typical when you haven't played competitively for four months.
"Jared played better than his scores show," Martin added. "His ball striking was good. He just left some putts out there."
Georgia State's Alexander Herrmann leads all players at 6-under 71-67=138.
As a squad, the Bearcats are tied for sixth place at 1-over 290-287=577. Host South Alabama leads the 15-team event at 11-under 278-287=565.
"We left some opportunities on the course today that have cost us after 36 holes," Martin said. "But it was one of the most consistent two rounds of golf we've played in a long time. There were some good things done by everybody. We just have to build on it."
