CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) started the spring season on a strong note, earning his fifth top-10 finish of 2016-17, tying for third place at 3-under par 71-71-71=213 Tuesday at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate in Mobile, Alabama.
Squires climbed eight positions in the standings on the final day, posting a third consecutive steady round of play that included three birdies and 13 par scores. He completed the 54-hole event at the Magnolia Grove Golf Club (par 72, 7,150 yards) with 11 birdies and 36 par scores.
The tie for third place marks Squires' highest finish since claiming medalist honors at the Firestone Invitational (Oct. 4, 2016) with an 11-under 69-68-68=205. He has registered 13 below-par rounds since the start of the fall season.
"Austin is on a different level right now and needs to keep finding ways to get better," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "When you are getting to the point where Austin is approaching you've got to save one or two shots a tournament. A few shots on three par 5s today were the difference in him winning the tournament."
UC senior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) finished the event two strokes back of Squires, tying for 11th place at 1-under 72-72-71=215. O'Kelley led the 75-player field with 45 par scores in 54 holes. O'Kelley recorded two birdies and 15 par scores during final-round action.
"Jared hit the ball very well all three rounds," Martin said. "He didn't give himself a lot of great birdie looks but it was a solid way to start off the spring."
In his first tournament of the 2016-17 season, UC senior Chad Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) tied for 31st place at 77-72-71=220.
Georgia State's Alexander Herrmann (71-67-72=210) and Chattanooga's Wes Gosselin (66-75-69=210) tied for individual medalist honors at 6-under.
Cincinnati finished sixth in the team standings at 1-over 290-287-288=865, its third-best team score since the start of the fall season. Louisville won the team title at 8-under 284-283-289=856.
"We played some very consistent golf this week," Martin said. "When you are playing against good teams, your fourth and fifth players have to step up. We had some pretty good scores from those positions. Chad Howard had 36 holes of solid play. We just need to continue to get better."
