Bearcats Falter at Coastal Carolina

-- The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team fell victim to a big second half on Friday afternoon en route to a 19-8 loss at Coastal Carolina in Conway, South Carolina. Freshman Monica Borzillo (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) again led the Bearcats with four points on two goals and two assists while sophomore Amanda Donovan (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) scored her first two goals of the season.

The Chanticleers scored in bunches throughout the game, scoring three or more consecutive goals on five occasions. The Bearcats continued to battle, using a three-goal rally to get within 12-7 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game, but the Chanticleers scored seven of the final eight goals to close the contest.

- With the loss, Cincinnati falls to 0-2 while Coastal Carolina opens its season at 1-0.
- UC fell to 2-3 all-time against the Chanticleers and 0-3 in the last three seasons.
- Borzillo has recorded at least two goals and two assists in each game this season.

- Junior Schuyler Nissen (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) picked up four ground balls in the game, doubling her previous career high of two.

"Right now we are not a tough team" said head coach Gina Oliver. "We are struggling to find ourselves in the midst of a challenge. When we get hit, we struggle to get up. I believe in this team. We are extremely talented, but talent doesn't win you games. Culture does. Once we believe in that, we will not only start winning games but become a great team."

Cincinnati wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the first half when Stegmann opened the scoring with an unassisted goal one minute into the game.

The reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week notched her fourth goal of the season with 18:55 remaining in the first half to get the Bearcats within a goal at 3-2. Sophomore Maria Collacchi (Parkton, Md./Hereford) tallied her first goal of the season shortly after to tie the game.

Donovan got herself on the scoreboard right before the close of the half, receiving a pass from Borzillo and notching her first goal of the year to cut the Coastal Carolina lead to 7-4 at halftime.

The Chanticleers scored five goals in five minutes, capped by Kyger's shot with just over 19 minutes remaining, for a 12-4 lead.

The freshman from Fayetteville, New York, registered her first-career goal to finish a three-goal Cincinnati scoring run in the second half. Fess's goal was unassisted on a free position shot, UC's only free-position goal of the game.
