CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle) continued his strong start to the spring season with a 74-69-143 combined score during 36-holes of action on Monday at the Colleton River Club in Bluffton, S.C.
Squires opend the day with a 74 on the first 18 holes before completing his day with a 69. After tallying just two birdies during the opening round, Squires added six during the final 18 holes. His second-round 69 is just one stroke shy of his career-low.
Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) also turned in a solid performance during the first day of action, recording a 71-74-145 during the 36-holes. He's day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 548-yard second hole and currently is tied for fourth place.
Chad Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) was third for the Bearcats with even rounds of 75 to place tied for 15th after 36 holes. Jake Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) is tied for 46th with scores of 77-79-165 and Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) is tied for 64th with scores of 79-82-161 to round out UC's scoring team.
As a team the Bearcats are currently in third place and just four stroke off the lead. They are just two strokes behind No. 29 Michigan State. UAB leads the field with a score of 292-298-590.
Brennen Walsh (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder High School) and Davis Baxter (Nolensville, Tenn./Ravenwood High School) both competed as individuals at the event and currently place 15th and 19th overall respectively. Walsh recorded a 75-75-150 during the 36 holes while Baxter finished the day with a score of 74-77-151.

"We did some really good things today," stated head coach Doug Martin of the first day. "Squires, O'Kelley and Howard played solid golf in very tough conditions. We made some costly errors at inopportune times today, but the good news is we are in the last group with a chance to win tomorrow. We need to finish strong tomorrow."
