University of Cincinnati senior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) matched his career-best three-round tournament score, carding a 7-under par 71-68-70=209 Tuesday during final-round play at the Lone Star Invitational at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
O'Kelley recorded a 2-under 70 on Tuesday, highlighted by a 3-under score on the front nine that included a trio of birdies and six par scores. His 7-under 209 score matches his career-low set during a third-place finish at the Invitational at the Ocean Course on Sept. 12, 2015. It marks O'Kelley's second consecutive top-6 finish of the 2017 spring season and sixth top-10 finish of the 2016-17 campaign.
"Jared was very very solid all week," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "To finish sixth against the competition in this field is something to build on. His ball striking was outstanding all week and he did a good job of managing his game."
UC sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) ended the San Antonio event tied for 23rd place at 2-under 73-69-72=214. He registered 12 par scores and birdied three of his last five holes on Tuesday.
"Austin had another strong week despite not having his best stuff," Martin said. "He did a good job of working himself around the course even though he wasn't at his best."
Oklahoma's Mex McGreevy claimed medalist honors recording a 20-under 69-63-64=196.
The Bearcats finished ninth in the team standings at 1-over 288-286-291=865. Fifteenth-ranked Oklahoma won the team title at 40-under 278-279-267=824. Seventh-ranked Illinois took second at 36-under 272-277-279=828.
"For Oklahoma to shoot 21-under today," Martin said, "It was probably the best 18-hole round of golf I've ever seen. This was a solid field and we'll take a lot from this experience. Overall, we didn't play the par 5s very well. We need to convert more of our opportunities on those holes. We're close and when we do, we'll move up the standings in these tournaments."
