WESTFIELD, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team began the 2017 spring season with a 1-0 shutout of the DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday at the Circle City College Showcase at Grand Park.
In the first of six matches, the Bearcats got their spring off to a strong start with a shutout of BIG EAST foe DePaul. Freshman midfielder Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) recorded the lone goal of the match in the 33rd minute when he won the ball off of a DePaul player in the attacking third and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper for the score.
The team had multiple additional scoring chances with a pair of corner kicks prior to Clarke's goal. Sophomore forward Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) was able to generate two shots on goal, while freshman goalkeeper Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) had two big saves in the second half to erase a pair of Blue Demon scoring chances en route to a shutout.
"It was a good first outing for us," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "I thought we played well, especially in the first half. Our possession and movement was good and we created a number of quality chances. The tempo in the second half was a little slower as the guys got tired and DePaul picked up their play and pressed us. I thought Sean Clarke had a good debut; scoring the only goal and was often dangerous. Overall, a good performance against a quality BIG EAST team."
