Bearcats Comeback Comes up Short vs. UConn

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team scored six of the final eight goals but could not complete the comeback, falling 18-11 against UConn on Saturday afternoon at the Sheakley Athletics Center.

The trio of sophomores Amanda Donovan (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) and Katie Stegmann (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) and freshman Monica Borzillo (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) led the Bearcats offense with 14 total points between them. After scoring just a single point in the last three games, Borzillo got back on track against the Huskies scoring two goals and dishing three assists for her 70th point of the season. Donovan and Stegmann each scored a hat trick and added an assist for four points in the game.

The Bearcats found themselves down 16-5 with 20 minutes remaining in the game but mounted a furious comeback, scoring three straight goals and six of the final eight, to get the final score within seven.

- With the loss, Cincinnati moves to 5-10 on the season and 1-6 in the BIG EAST while UConn moves to 6-8 and 3-4.
- Borzillo's five points extend her program single-season records for points to 70. She also owns the single-season records for points per game (4.67), assists (34) and assists per game (2.27).
- Stegmann tied a career high with four points.
- Junior Schuyler Nissen (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) collected five ground balls to tie a career best.
- Freshman Alexandra Fess (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) tied a career high with three ground balls.
- Sophomore Julia Byrne (McLean, Va./Langley) tied a career high with a pair of ground balls while also adding a goal.
- UC topped UConn in draw controls (19-12) and free position goals (4-1) while the Huskies led in shots (34-24), ground balls (37-29), clears (16-11), and caused turnovers (15-13). Both teams finished the game with nine saves.

The Bearcats earned the ball on a restart with 17 seconds remaining on the possession clock and Stegmann took the ball straight through the arc. The sophomore earned a free position shot with just eight seconds remaining and buried it for the team's first goal of the game.

Just 10 seconds after the Huskies made the score 11-3, Cincinnati answered with a quick goal right before halftime. Stegmann sent a pass into Donovan who shed her defender with a spin before scoring from directly in front of the cage.

The Bearcats' second-half comeback began with just over 18 minutes on the clock. Freshman Amanda Fess (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) won a free position shot and opted to pass to a cutting Donovan for the goal. It set off a run of three straight for Cincinnati to get the Bearcats within 16-8.

Head coach Gina Oliver took a timeout with 59 seconds remaining on the clock to set up the final possession for the Bearcats. After working the ball around the arc, Borzillo found Stegmann for the goal with eight seconds remaining to bring the final score to 18-11.

The Bearcats get the week off before returning to the Sheakley Athletics Center on Saturday, April 22, for a 6 p.m. game vs. Vanderbilt.
