T&F Posts Big Marks in Louisville as Tudor Smashes Discus Record

April 29, 2017

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track and field program had another successful day of competition as the Bearcats combined to post nine marks that now rank in the program's all-time Top 10, including another school record from Macklin Tudor at the 123rd Penn Relays, as most of the team competed at the Lyles/Wood Invitational in Louisville, Ky. All told, the women accounted for eight of those Top 10 marks, including the second-best marks all-time in the 4x100m relay and the triple jump.

// TUDOR SMASHES DISCUS RECORD
Tudor entered the day in Philadelphia with a best of 61.74m, which he threw earlier this season to break his own school record. Tudor not only won the championship division of the event at the Penn Relays by nearly 7', he also would break his own school record three times officially. Tudor's first mark was 62.25m before he tossed the plate to 62.89m in the second round, also giving him a life time best after he threw 62.50m last year as an unattached athlete while redshirting at UC. Then, in the first round of the finals, Tudor really let it fly as he hit a toss of 63.54m (208-05) for his first mark in the 63m distance and his third breaking of the record on the day. For good measure, Tudor added a toss of 63.31m in the fifth round for his second 63m throw ever. Once the results were finalized, Tudor rose to second in the NCAA and is now in the Top 15 on the world list.

// RUNNING AWAY WITH MARKS
The women's sprinters had quite a day as well. In Louisville, the second event of the day was 4x100m relay where the team of Kellsa Mbah, Haisha Bisiolu, Bryana Robinson and Tiona Lattimore combined to run 44.72 and finish second in the race. That time also moved the relay to second on the program's all-time Top 10 ledger and made them just the third Bearcats relay to break 45 seconds.

Those ladies were not done yet, however, as two of them recorded individual Top 10 marks as well. First, Lattimore ran 11.92 to take fourth in the 100m dash and improve her ranking to No. 8 all-time in UC history. Later, in the 400m dash, Bisiolu was third overall with a time of 54.77, which ranks as the sixth-best in UC history. Robinson was second in that race with a season-best 54.11.

// JUMPING INTO NEW RANKINGS
Mbah, who led off the relay, also was not finished with the record book for the day as she was one of two Bearcats to improve in the triple jump. Irati Mitxelena was the victor in the event as she took the top honor with a bounce of 12.39m (40-07.75), which pushed her second all-time in UC history. Mbah was third overall in the event as she jumped to 12.11m (39-08.75) and the No. 4 spot on the chart. She is now just the fourth woman in UC history to record a mark of 12.00m or better in the triple jump.

// MID-DISTANCES JOIN THE PARTY
Three mid-distance women also joined in on the record book rewriting session as two women made their marks in the 1,500m run before one joined the 800m ledger for the first time. In the longer event, Vanessa Robinson ran 4:37.86 to record a personal best and move up to sixth on the all-time list. In the same race, Madison Dunlap raced to a time of 4:41.14 to add her name to the list for the first time in her career as she now sits ninth all-time. Meg Westerheide, who ranks second in the 1,500m run, took aim at joining the 800m list and did just that as she ran 2:12.48 to move into the No. 9 slot on the two-lap race.

// VALLES VICTORIOUS
Adrian Valles remained perfect in the pole vault this year as he won the event for the third time while posting a season-best clearance of 5.55m (18-02.50). Valles, who broke his own venue and meet record that he recorded last year, also nearly cleared 5.70m which, had he been successful, would have qualified him for the IAAF World Outdoor Championships later this summer for his native Spain.

// BLAUT REMAINS UNDEFEATED
Mitxelena was not the only victorious woman on the day as Loretta Blaut once again was the top finisher in the high jump, winning her sixth outdoor meet in a row. This time, Blaut was able to clear 1.81m (5-11.25) for the victory and her fourth meet in a row with a clearance of 1.80m or better. Her winning mark also tied the facility record while also bettering the meet record (1.80m).

// MORE BESTS - WOMEN
Seven other marks recorded by the women were also personal-bests on the day. Some of the highlights from that list include:
- Angelica Lightfoot (5.42m/17-09.50) and Alexis Gray (13.20m/42-03.75) each tied their PRs with Lightfoot doing so in the long jump and Gray in the shot put.
- Sammy Hentz nearly made her way onto the 800m list as she ran 2:13.30, taking nearly one full second off her previous best.
- Sylvana Ross ran a time of 56.12 to finish sixth in the 400m dash, lowering her season PR total to nearly four full seconds
- Freshman Hannah Markel ran 4:44.56 in the 1,500m run, lowering her career-best time by nearly eight seconds in the process

// MORE BESTS - MEN
The men tallied 14 personal bests on the day. Several highlights from this grouping include:
- Austin Edwards and Alex Bloom both had career days in the same events as both posted big marks in the 100m dash and the long jump. Edwards, a true freshman, posted a time of 10.83 and jumped 7.34m (24-01.00) while Bloom, a decathlete, ran 11.04 and jumped 7.23m (23-08.75), his first 7m mark.
- Dan Huben, after a big run in the steeplechase at the Penn Relays Thursday night, came back and posted two more PRs, running 4:04.84 in the 1,500m run and 1:00.46 in the 400m hurdles.
- Nathan Alexander, who last year added the 400m dash to his event list after primarily competing in the pole vault, added the 800m to his list and ran 1:59.29.

// IN THE BLOCKS
A small group of Bearcats will return to the Bluegrass Commonwealth next Saturday, May 6, as they will take part in the Kentucky Relays. The meet will be the final chance for the Bearcats to prepare for the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships that will take place May 12-14 in Houston.
