Conference Release | Squires NCAA Tournament Bio
University of Cincinnati sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Player of the Year the league announced Friday.
Squires, one of three league players who also earned unanimous all-conference honors Friday, is the program's first student-athlete to earn league player of the year accolades.
The announcement marks the latest achievement in a standout sophomore campaign for Squires. On Thursday, he was selected to compete in the NCAA Tournament regional in West Lafayette, Indiana, on May 15-17, becoming only the fifth player in school history to participate as an individual in the national event. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals, May 26-31, in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
Squires led all league players with six top-5 finishes during 2016-17. His tie for fifth at the American Championship, Apr. 25, in Palm Harbor, Florida, helped lead the Bearcats to a tie for second in the team standings, the program's best conference tournament finish since 1994. He registered 10 top-25 finishes in UC's 12 tournaments this year, claiming medalist honors at the Firestone Invitational on Oct. 4, after carding an eagle on the final hole to win the event.
Squires enters the NCAA Tournament with a school-record low 71.71 stroke average.
