CINCINNATI – Looking to build off of its most successful season in a decade, the 2017 University of Cincinnati men's soccer schedule was announced Wednesday by head coach Hylton Dayes.
Following earning a 9-7-1 overall record in 2016, including a program-high fourth place finish in the American Athletic Conference, the Bearcats will face a challenging and exciting schedule in 2017. This year's slate will feature 10 home contests, highlighted by hosting crosstown rival Xavier. Fans are invited to Experience UC all season long with free admission to every home match. AAC play will include seven matches including visiting NCAA Tournament teams USF and Tulsa.
"We are excited to unveil our 2017 schedule," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "It's a very challenging schedule with a good mix of regional and national-level opponents. We have an excellent home schedule, highlighted by local rival Xavier and national power UConn. We also look forward to our regional matchup with Kentucky in Lexington and tough conference road matches at Tulsa and South Florida. Overall, this schedule allows us to continue developing our players and with the right results puts us in position to compete for the conference championship and an NCAA Tournament bid."
The regular season will open on Friday, Aug. 25, when UC welcomes Gardner-Webb to Gettler Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Bearcats will follow their home opener with back-to-back road contests, first visiting Wright State on Monday, Aug. 28, and then heading to Kalamazoo, Michigan a week later to face Western Michigan on Monday, Sept. 4.
UC will welcome XU on Friday, Sept. 8, and then hit the road again to visit 2016 NCAA Tournament participant Kentucky on Tuesday, Sept. 12, and Bowling Green on Saturday, Sept. 16. The Bearcats' first homestand of the season will begin on Saturday, Sept. 23, when they open league play against Memphis and will then play host to Green Bay on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Road AAC action will commence with a trip to Tampa, Florida to square off against reigning conference regular season champion USF on Saturday, Sept. 30. UC will follow with a return to Gettler Stadium for contests versus UConn on Saturday, Oct. 7, and IUPUI on Tuesday, Oct. 10. A subsequent trek to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to battle the Temple Owls on Saturday, Oct. 14, will then take place.
Their longest homestand of the year will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when the Bearcats welcome Fort Wayne, will continue on Saturday, Oct. 21, versus league foe SMU, and end with the final nonconference game of the season against Cleveland State on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
The American play will wrap up with a trip out West to face 2016 league tournament champion Tulsa on Saturday, Oct. 28, and will conclude with hosting UCF in the final home match of the season on Saturday, Nov. 4.
The 2017 American Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship will be held Friday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 12, at the campus site of the regular season league champion. The top four teams will qualify with the semifinals on Nov. 10 and the title match on Nov. 12. The winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament which opens with first round games on Nov. 16, and concludes with the Men's College Cup in Philadelphia, Dec. 8 and 10.
The fall will open with three exhibition matches. Detroit Mercy will provide the opposition on Friday, Aug. 11, at Gettler Stadium, followed by a visit from Rio Grande on Monday, Aug. 14. The final tuneup will be Saturday, Aug. 19 at Lipscomb.
