PRACTICE: Mini-Camp Practice 1
DATE: July 26, 2017
LOCATION: Nippert Stadium
GEAR: Helmets
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati football team opened preseason camp Wednesday with a 90-minute practice in helmets on the Nippert Stadium turf.
The recent change in NCAA legislation eliminated two-a-day practices. In order to utilize all allowed preseason practices, teams are reporting a week earlier than usual. UC's first five practices, the NCAA mandated acclimatization period in helmets and later shoulder pads constitutes a mini-camp for the Bearcats. UC will be in full pads on Wednesday, August 2, 2017.
The starting quarterback position is always a topic of discussion with Head Coach Luke Fickell looking to name a starter during training camp. Junior Hayden Moore and sophomore Ross Trail will continue to battle for the starting signal-caller job with both players earning high marks for their leadership efforts during the Bearcats' player-run summer workouts.
Moore has 10 career starts under his belt and threw for 11 TDs a year ago, including a 371-yard performance in the season finale at Tulsa with TD throws of 38, 82 and 70 yards. He also had a 29-yard TD reception on a throwback pass.
Trail made two starts in 2016, rushing for two TDs and throwing another.
Jake Sopko has yet to take a collegiate snap after redshirting in 2016 and true freshman Desmond Ridder is entering his first training camp.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Bearcats will return to the field for their second mini-camp workout on Thursday, July 27, 2017 in Nippert Stadium. The 2017 season kicks off against Austin Peay on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. ET in Nippert Stadium.
