CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer's 2017 preseason begins Friday, Aug. 11, when it welcomes Detroit to Gettler Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Bearcats will have two additional exhibition matches during the preseason including hosting Rio Grande on Monday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. and visiting Lipscomb on Aug. 19 at 8 p.m.
The two home exhibition matches, as well as all UC men's soccer regular season home games, will feature free admission to Gettler Stadium as part of the Experience UC initiative.
"We are excited to get our exhibition season underway," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "With only two weeks before our first regular season match, it's very important that we play against outside competition to aid in our preparation. The matches will also allow us to train our style of play, introduce new tactics, and also get in match fitness. With a number of new players slated to have important roles in our team this fall, the matches will give them much needed experience against other college teams and help us integrate them into our team."
Detroit enters 2017 on the heels of a 3-10-4 record last season including a 1-6-2 mark in Horizon League play. The Titans return their top scorer from last year in Spiro Pilakos who tallied nine points, including four goals, en route to being named second team all-conference.
Rio Grande was the NAIA National Championship runner-up for the second-consecutive year in 2016 with an overall record of 21-2-2. The Red Storm returns Jorge Guinovart who scored 14 goals and dished out 12 assists last year. As a result, Guinovart was named a NAIA First Team All-American.
Lipscomb went 10-6-2 last year including a 3-2-1 record in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Bisons return the trio of Joe Kerridge, Ivan Alvarado and Logan Paynter who each were Second Team All-Region selections in 2016. Paynter led the way with 11 goals and four assists.
Following earning a 9-7-1 overall record in 2016, including a program-high fourth place finish in the American Athletic Conference, the Bearcats will face a challenging and exciting schedule in 2017. This year's slate will feature 10 home contests, highlighted by hosting crosstown rival Xavier. AAC play will include seven matches including visiting NCAA Tournament teams USF and Tulsa.
