CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Detroit Titans on Friday evening at Gettler Stadium in both teams' first preseason exhibition of the year.

Sophomore Elias Helbig (Denver, Colo./East/Creighton) found the back of net late for the Bearcats off of a free kick in the 88th minute following a Detroit foul. Helbig took the kick near side and bent it in from just outside the penalty box.

The Titans got on the scoreboard early with a penalty kick conversion from Tyler Moorman following a yellow card in the box issued to junior Peyton Mowery (Troy, Ohio/Troy) in the 15th minute. The Bearcats nearly matched minutes later when sophomore Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) fed freshman Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Maryland/Loyola Blakefield) from the near side to the middle of the box for a shot that was turned away by Titans goalkeeper Robbie Beckwell in the 22nd minute. Despite UC possessing the ball for much of the first half, Moorman again found the back of the net in the 33rd minute off of an assist from Jake Reitzloff. Detroit then pulled ahead 3-0 in the 41st minute following a Bearcats defensive miscue.

Playing with mostly reserves in the second half, UC was able to create some scoring chances but wasn't quite able to convert with six shots including two on goal. The Bearcats' aggressiveness paid off late when they forced a foul that Helbig later deposited for the score. The match was aggressive in general with five yellow cards issued as well as a red card given to Detroit's Garret Weaver in the 52nd minute.

// COACH DAYES ON THE BEARCATS
"Tonight was a learning experience for us," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "Credit to Detroit. They were organized and stuck to their game plan of sitting deep and countering. We gave up three goals in the first half which was very disappointing considering we had majority of the possession. The breakdowns in the back are things we will go back and fix. Offensively, we did not move the ball quick enough and struggled to penetrate their low block until late in the game. We will get back to work tomorrow to improve in many key areas as we prepare for our match on Monday against Rio Grande."
