CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati football team took a day away from the practice field Sunday, holding Family Day in the West Pavilion of Nippert Stadium.

Over 350 family were present for brunch on the club level, giving family members a chance to interact with Head Coach Luke Fickell and the Bearcats coaching staff. Families also watched UC's scrimmage in Nippert on Saturday night.

"Family is a huge part of everything we do," Fickell said. "A day like this makes the families realize how big a part of things they are. They've got to have some balance. Important to be able to spend some time together. It makes the families realize they are a big part of this. I know these guys are away from the grind of training camp and we want them to understand they need balance. Their families are every bit as important as our families."

Family Day marks the halfway point of training camp for the Bearcats. With new NCAA-mandated time-management rules in place, student-athletes are required to have one off day in a seven-day period.

The reality is you need a day off," Fickell said. "And with the new rules in place, it's required, but we would have done it anyways.
There's an opportunity here and it's important to us. Our players' health is important, their mental health is important and their families are important. It also allows us to be in a situation to really make a great run at the last seven days of camp."

UC heads back to the Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center in West Harrison, Indiana on Sunday night in preparation for a return to the practice fields on Monday. The Bearcats open 2017 on Thursday, Aug. 31 against Austin Peay at 7 p.m. ET in Nippert Stadium.
