University of Cincinnati men's golfers senior Davis Baxter (Nolensville, Tenn./Ravenwood High School) and junior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) opened play in the U.S. Amateur on Monday in Los Angeles, Calif.
Baxter shot a 3-over par 73 at the Riviera Country Club (7,272 yards/Par 70) to tie 19 other players for 97th place in the 312-player field. Baxter started his round on the first hole and carded an even par score at the turn. Four bogeys on the back nine helped result in his 3-over 73 score.
Squires finished his round at 6-over 76 at nearby Bel-Air Country Club (6,722 yards/Par 70) to tie 28 players for 184th place. He struggled out of the gate, starting at 6-over through his first seven holes, but settled down to shoot par over his final 11 holes.
The trio of Norman Xiong (San Diego, Calif.), Hayden Wood (Edmond, Okla.) and Mark Lawrence Jr., (Richmond, Va.) are tied for the lead at 6-under 64.
Tuesday marks the final round of the two-day stroke play portion of the nation's top amateur tournament. Squires begins second-round action at the Riviera Country Club at 11:24 a.m. ET while Baxter will play at the Bel-Air Country Club, starting at 11:55 a.m. ET.
The top 64 stroke-play finishers will advance to the five-day match play portion of the event that begins Wednesday at the Riviera Club.

On his opening-round play:
"It was a good day overall. I didn't have my best stuff but was able to grind out a solid round to put myself in position. My focus Tuesday will be to stick to my game plan and stay positive. That will give me the best chance to put together another good round." – Davis Baxter
"My round didn't go how I wanted it to. I got off to a really rough start. I struck the ball well enough to shoot around even par but my putter let me down. I knew to have any chance of making the cut I'd have to find a way to finish the round even or under par. I had a bogey and a birdie coming in to finish at 6-over. I think I still have a good chance of making the cut, but it will probably take something in the 60s (on Tuesday)." – Austin Squires
