CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team (1-0-0) kicked off the 2017 regular season with a 3-1 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs (0-1-0) on Friday night at Gettler Stadium.

With the teams feeling each other out early in both squads' season opener, the Bearcats gained the advantage and the momentum around the 30-minute mark when sophomore David Sanz deposited a free kick into the back of the net for the first score of the year. UC stayed aggressive and minutes later, freshman Darryn Commissiong showed his one-on-one talent to push the Bearcats' advantage to two. Midway through the second half, GWU's persistence paid off when they pulled within a goal with a score from Magnus Moldjord. The match became very physical late in the second with the Runnin' Bulldogs playing a man down through the final 15 minutes. UC put a cherry on top of the win in the final minute when Malik Suleman scored his first goal as a Bearcat versus an extended GWU defense.

The Bearcats stayed on the attack as Sanz fed Commissiong who went 1v1 against a back-pedaling defender and beat the goalkeeper with his left foot to add to the UC lead.

63' - GWU Magnus Moldjord (Severin Soerlie)
Moldjord took a cross from Soerlie from the left side which he deposited into the net from inside the 18 for the score.

With GWU's defense playing up in search of the match-tying goal, Melink played the ball through to Smythe who possessed it in a UC 3v1 and pushed it over to Suleman who finished into the open net.
