PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four University of Cincinnati men's soccer student-athletes garnered American Athletic Conference Weekly Honors Monday as freshman Darryn Commissiong was named Rookie of the Week, freshman Noah Lawrence was picked as Goalkeeper of the Week, junior Malik Suleman was selected as Defensive Player of the Week, and sophomore David Sanz was tabbed to the Honor Roll.
They earned the awards after helping UC secure a 3-1 season-opening victory Friday against visiting Gardner-Webb.
Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario) scored the game winner in the 33rd minute when he went 1v1 against a back-pedaling defender and beat the goalkeeper with his left foot to add to the UC lead. In total, the rookie had two shots on goal in 70 minutes of play.
Lawrence (Mitchelville, Md.) was solid between the pipes in full time with three saves as well as providing good defensive direction to the Bearcats' back line.
Starting the match as a defender, Suleman (Kumasi, Ghana /Cincinnati State) played the full 90 minutes in his first action at the NCAA Division I level. With GWU's defense playing up in search of the match-tying goal late, Suleman finished into the open net in a UC 3v1 in the 90th minute.
Sanz (Santander, Spain/IE La Marina) led UC with a goal and an assist on the night including the first score of the match on a free kick in the 28th minute and a dish to Commissiong to put the Bearcats up 2-0 in the first half. In total, the midfielder paced the Bearcats with six shots including four on goal.
SMU's Mauro Cichero won league Offensive Player of the Week after recording his first career hat trick in a 3-2 win over UC Davis. The AAC Honor Roll was complete with UCF's Yannik Oettl, UConn's Abdou Mbacke Thiam, Tulsa's Rollie Rocha and Miguel Velasquez.
