CINCINNATI – In conjunction with the American Athletic Conference, the University of Cincinnati women's basketball program released its 2017-18 schedule Wednesday afternoon featuring 18 home regular season games.
Due to the current, $87-million renovation of Fifth Third Arena, the Bearcats will play all home contests off campus this year. In the regular season, UC will play two games at Cincinnati State – the Nov. 13 home opener against Slippery Rock and the Nov. 27 meeting with St. Francis (Pa.) – with the remaining games played at St. Ursula Academy Gymnasium & Convocation Center (SUA). The exhibition on Nov. 2 against Findlay will also be played at Cincinnati State.
Highlighted among the out-of-conference slate is home dates against current Atlantic Coast Conference member and former league mate Pittsburgh on Nov. 21 as well as Big Ten Conference team and intrastate rival Ohio State on Dec. 17. In league action, 2017 NCAA participants USF (Jan. 3) and Temple (Jan. 13) will visit the Queen City. In total, the Bearcats will face four NCAA Tournament teams from last season as well as seven teams who finished 2016-17 among the RPI top 100.
Home games in 2017-18 will be broadcasted live throughout the season including the 12/17 meeting with the Buckeyes airing on ESPN2, the 2/17 matchup versus Tulsa streaming on the American Digital Network (ADN), and the remaining contests available free of charge on GoBearcats.com. UC can also be seen live on the road on ESPN3 (Houston - Jan. 10, UConn - Feb. 4, Temple – Feb. 21) as well as on ADN (SMU – Jan. 24).
Totaling 29 games, the Red & Black's 2017-18 campaign kicks off on the road for the second-consecutive year with a trip to Johnson City, Tennessee to take on the ETSU Buccaneers on Nov. 10 at Brooks Gym. UC will then return to Cincinnati for a seven-game homestand beginning first with the home opener at Cincinnati State versus Slippery Rock on Nov. 13. Highlighted among the stand is Pitt visiting SUA on Nov. 21.
UC will visit Old Dominion on Dec. 3 before returning to the Queen City to battle crosstown rival Xavier on Dec. 10 in the 2017 edition of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout at XU's Cintas Center.
Out-of-league-play will end with a three-game homestand, highlighted by hosting OSU a week before the Christmas holiday.
"We are looking forward to playing our well-balanced and competitive nonconference schedule this season," said head coach Jamelle Elliott, "which is highlighted by games against in-state teams Miami, Xavier, Ohio State, and Bowling Green. We will also be starting a series with Pittsburgh with us hosting the first game of the series. With the addition of four incoming freshmen and the return of our two leading scorers and seniors Ana Owens and Shanice Johnson, this year's nonconference schedule will give us an opportunity as a team to get some really good early-season game experience against some highly-competitive opponents both at home and on the road before we start conference play."
Playing five of its 11 opponents twice and six opponents once each, the Bearcats will open up American Athletic Conference action at East Carolina on Dec. 30. UC will then welcome 2017 NCAA Tournament squad USF to SUA on Jan. 3 to open home conference play. Subsequently, the Bearcats will head West to battle Tulsa (Jan. 6) and Houston (Jan. 10) before returning for a two game homestand featuring 2017 NCAA Tournament team Temple on Jan. 13 and Memphis on Jan. 21.
The Red & Black will visit defending AAC Champion and 2017 NCAA Final Four participant UConn on Feb. 4 and will then trek to Kansas to oppose new AAC member Wichita State on Feb. 7.
The regular season will wrap up with three of UC's final five games at home including wrapping with Houston at SUA on Feb. 26.
"Last season, almost every game in the AAC was a battle," said Elliott, "and I anticipate another competitive conference season this year. Our goal will be to continue to get better as a team as we get deeper and deeper into conference play."
The 2018 American Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship will be held March 3-6 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
