Box Score
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team survived the elements Friday night, topping the visiting IUPUI Jaguars, 2-1, at Gettler Stadium.
With the win, the Red & Black (2-1-0) remains perfect at Gettler Stadium on the young season while IUPUI (0-2-0) dropped its second-consecutive contest.
Facing a 1-0 deficit at halftime, UC really turned it on early in the second half. Sophomore David Sanz (Santander, Spain/IE La Marina) scored his third goal in as many matches with a strike in the 56th minute. Sanz was again involved in a Bearcats score when sophomore forward Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) collected his corner kick and found the back of the net for the match-winning goal.
In his first start of the season, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) set the tone early with a key stop. Playing through steady rain the entire match, the Bearcats dodged a bullet early when they were whistled for a foul in the box. Facing a possible early deficit, Skinner guessed right and turned away an IUPUI penalty kick attempt which, in turn, energized his team.
The Jaguars scored the first goal of the match late in the first half off of a rebound and went into the break with a 1-0 advantage. From the jump in the second period, UC enforced its will on the visitors from Indianapolis. On the attack, UC scored twice in less than 10 minutes early in the half and kept the Jaguars at bay for the duration of the game. The Bearcats did have a few scares late as IUPUI was scrambling for the match-tying goal, but ultimately no damage was done. The Red & Black's defensive effort on the night was highlighted by three saves by keeper Skinner as well as solid support from defenders such as junior Peyton Mowery (Troy, Ohio/Troy) who had a couple key takeaways.
