The Bearcat Invitational serves as the opening tournament of the fall season for UC after the threat of Hurricane Irma caused the cancellation of the Invitational at the Ocean Course scheduled to be played Sept. 11-12 in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

 // QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
On UC's delayed start to the 2017 fall season:
"I initially had some concerns about the long wait until our first tournament. Some of the teams competing this week will be playing in their third tournament of the fall. You can't replace those experiences. But our team has displayed a tremendous work ethic since the start of the semester and, with it being our home event and having our supporters here, I'm excited to see the kids perform."

On the team's game plan for the Bearcat Invitational:
"The mindset for our team is to go out and compete. The high level of competition that makes up this field should energize our team. We need to go out and play one shot, one hole at a time and enjoy playing against a great field."

On how the competitive field helps the UC golf program:
"We want to continue to grow. The only way we will get the program to the next level is to play against competition that will raise the bar for our kids. We want to continue to bring in the best teams in the country to Coldstream and the city of Cincinnati. We want to continue to build this event and see how we stack up."

On building off the success of Austin Squires
"Austin is a top-100 player in college golf. He's someone you can count on most every day. We have to have other guys on our team challenge him at tournaments. Austin showed great improvement between his freshman and sophomore year. The other guys on the team are looking for the formula to have similar success."

On the team's goals for the year:
"First, we want to play with a winning mentality. When you go to a tournament, you've got to expect to compete and expect to win. We've also talked about defending at the Firestone Invitational. Anytime you go back to a tournament that you've won, defending is a huge thing. We've talked about finishing rounds and tournaments. It's very important. When you are in position to finish well or win a tournament you've got to finish the tournament. Lastly, we want to qualify for the NCAAs. We are in a position where that is a legitimate goal. We have to perform on the road. We have the ability internally with the team. Now, we have to compete and do the things well on the road to get a berth."

On how practicing at Coldstream Country Club has helped the program:
"It's a complete game changer for this program. This a tour-ready golf course. We play a very difficult schedule and play a lot of golf courses that require very high-level shots. Coldstream forces you to practice those shots you have to hit on the road to compete at tournaments."

// ABOUT THE BEARCATS
Cincinnati posted its highest finish at a league tournament since 1994 last season when it tied for second place at the American Championship. The Bearcats return junior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School), the 2017 AAC Player of the Year, who registered the program's best finish at the NCAA Tournament, tying for 21st place at 7-over 223 at the West Lafayette Regional. Only the fifth player in school history to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, Squires earned a conference-best six top-5 finishes in 2016-17, including medalist honors at the Firestone Invitational.

Squires and teammate senior Davis Baxter (Nolensville, Tenn./Ravenwood High School) each qualified for the U.S. Amateur during the summer. Baxter registered a course-record 62 at the Bearcats' home course, Coldstream Country Club, during the summer. Sophomore Jake Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School) posted five top-25 finishes a year ago, including a tie for ninth place at the American Championship. Junior Paul Huber (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) recorded his best finish of last season at the Intercollegiate at the Grove, tying for 13th place at 4-over 220.
