CINCINNATI
– University of Cincinnati men's soccer suffered a 3-1 setback Saturday at Gettler Stadium to the Memphis Tigers in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

With the loss, UC's three-match unbeaten streak was snapped as its record dropped to 4-3-1 overall and 0-1 in AAC action. Saturday's shortfall also marked the Red & Black's first setback at Gettler since Oct. 29, 2016 against Tulsa. Meanwhile, the Tigers improved to 2-3-2 on the year and moved to 1-0 in The American. The triumph was UM's first victory over UC since 2013.

In a tightly-contested matchup between two conference foes, the game featured a lot of ebb and flow. After a competitive, scoreless first half in which the two teams alternated as the aggressor, the Bearcats broke the tie early in the second half with a score by freshman midfielder Soren Jensen (Gentofte, Denmark) during the 54th minute. The Tigers answered minutes later with the equalizer in the 59th minute and followed again with the go-ahead score in the 61st minute. UM added an insurance goal shortly after in the 68th minute to pull away, 3-1.

UC nearly got within one goal late when freshman forward Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) raced down the field and flipped the ball over the defense only to have the ball hit off the post and cleared away by a Tigers defender. Playing well for 80 minutes, the 10-minute flurry by the visitors from Memphis proved costly for the Bearcats as they dropped a 3-1 decision.

Jensen's score in the 54th minute was his first as a Bearcat and marked the fifth score for a UC newcomer this season. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) was solid between the pipes with six saves. Skinner has notched 19 saves in his last three matches. Sophomore midfielder David Sanz (Santander, Spain/IE La Marina) had one shot on goal which was a header off of a redshirt sophomore defender Elias Helbig (Denver, Colo./East/Creighton) cross into the box in the 32nd minute that just happened to find the UM keeper who was in the right spot at the right time.
