// LAST TIME OUT
UC (4-3-1, 0-1-0 American) suffered a 3-1 setback Saturday at Gettler Stadium to the Memphis Tigers in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams. In a tightly-contested matchup between two conference foes, the game featured a lot of ebb and flow. After a competitive, scoreless first half in which the two teams alternated as the aggressor, the Bearcats broke the tie early in the second half with a score by freshman midfielder Soren Jensen (Gentofte, Denmark) during the 54th minute. The Tigers answered minutes later with the equalizer in the 59th minute and followed again with the go-ahead score in the 61st minute. UM added an insurance goal shortly after in the 68th minute to pull away, 3-1.
// SCOUTING GREEN BAY
Green Bay (4-1-2, 3-0-0 Horizon) is fresh off a 2-1 win at Wright State on Saturday. The Phoenix found itself down early, but goals from Audi Jepson and Brady Lenius secured the double-overtime victory at Alumni Field. The Phoenix is undefeated in six of its last seven matches and are outscoring Horizon League opponents 7-3 on the season. Jepson is pacing the Green Bay offensive attack with six goals, while Tomer Zloczower has five assists. In the preseason, the Phoenix were picked to finish seventh in the 10-team Horizon League.
// GREEN BAY SERIES
The all-time series between the two teams is knotted at two games apiece including a split in matches played in Cincinnati. UC has won the last two meetings including, most recently, a 2-0 home victory in 2015. Jack Clark (Mason, Ohio/Mason) scored the first goal of the game.
// BEARCAT CONNECTION
Green Bay head coach Jeremy Bonomo served as an assistant coach at UC from 2010-14. While at UC, Bonomo had a hand in securing six top-100 recruits, five high school All-Americans and one junior college All-American, two state players of the year and two members of youth national teams. Bonomo also played a vital role in developing the 2011 recruiting class for the Bearcats, which was ranked 28th nationally. Most recently, three of Bonomo's recruits inked contracts to play at the next level, two of which were chosen in the 2016 MLS Draft. Emmanuel Appiah was selected by the Colorado Rapids as the 15th overall pick and John Manga was also picked by the Colorado Rapids as the 63rd overall selection. In addition, Alejandro Garcia joined the Orlando City B of the United Soccer League.
// STREAK SNAPPED
With the home loss against Memphis on Saturday, UC's three-match unbeaten streak was snapped. The shortfall also marked the Red & Black's first setback at Gettler since Oct. 29, 2016 against Tulsa.
// YOUTH MOVEMENT
Seven Bearcats newcomers have seen action this year with each recording at least one start. The group has also scored five goals. Freshman Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) has been a catalyst among the newcomers with two goals and two assists. Freshmen Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) and Soren Jensen (Gentofte, Denmakr), as well as junior Malik Suleman (Kumasi, Ghana/Cincinnati State), have each scored a goal while Mads Tranberg (Copenhagen, Denmark) has dished out an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md.) started the season with a pair of starts between the pipes, notching five saves.
// RANKED ROAD WINS
UC took down a pair of ranked opponents on the road two weeks ago, beginning first with a 1-0 victory at No. 13 Kentucky on Sept. 12 and following with a 3-1 triumph at No. 19 Bowling Green on Sept. 16. The win at UK marked the program's first win over a top-25 team since beating 17th-ranked Temple, 3-2, on Sept. 26, 2015 at Gettler Stadium. It was also UC's first win over the Wildcats since 2001. Suffering their first defeat of the year, the Wildcats fell to 4-1-1 overall and dropped their first match in Lexington since Nov. 19, 2015. With the victory at BGSU, the Bearcats have now won five straight against the Falcons including the last two played in Bowling Green. BGSU fell to 5-2-0 on the year and suffered its first loss at Cochrane Stadium since Oct. 3, 2015.
