Box Score
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team bounced back with a 2-0 win over the visiting Green Bay Phoenix during nonconference play on Tuesday at Gettler Stadium.
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 5-3-1 on the season, 5-2-1 in nonleague play, and 3-1-1 at Gettler. UC is unbeaten in four of its last five matches and have now come out on top in the last three against UWGB. Meanwhile, the Phoenix falls to 4-2-2 overall and had its two-match winning streak snapped.
Looking to rebound from Saturday's home loss to Memphis, the Bearcats wasted no time with a score by freshman forward Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) just seconds into the match. Armed with a lead, the Red & Black was able to keep UWGB at bay throughout the half with a strong defensive presence. In pursuit of an insurance goal going into halftime, UC got just that when sophomore midfielder David Sanz (Santander, Spain/IE La Marina) deposited a free kick from about 20 yards out into the back of the net to put UC up 2-0 at the break.
Looking to preserve their lead in the second half, the Bearcats defense again prevented the Phoenix from getting behind their back line with strong challenges on UWGB offensive attacks. The visitors' few scoring chances were turned away by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) who had a pair of key saves in the period. Ultimately, the ability to dictate play after jumping out ahead was the difference as UC shutout Green Bay.
Commissiong's score was his second of the year and his first since the season opener against Gardner-Webb on Aug. 25. Sanz posted his fifth goal of the year and fourth assist of the season -- both team bests. Skinner recorded his second shutout of the season to go along with three saves. The goalkeeper's previous clean sheet was in the 1-0 win at No. 13 Kentucky on Sept. 12.
