CINCINNATI – In a highly-competitive match between two local rivals, the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team and the Xavier Musketeers played to a double-overtime 1-1 draw on Friday night in front of a Gettler Stadium record crowd of 2,013 fans.
With the draw, UC moves to 2-2-1 on the year, while XU marks at 3-1-1 in 2017. The tie is the Red & Black's first result against the Muskies since 2011.
After a scoreless first half, the Bearcats broke into the scoring column in the 57th minute off of a set piece orchestrated by sophomore midfielder David Sanz (Santander, Spain/IE La Marina) and finished by sophomore forward Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford). UC possessed the ball for much of the second half before XU added the equalizer late with just minutes to play in regulation.
In the two, 10-minute overtime periods, both teams played tight defense, wary of the sudden death implications. All said, the two rivals competed for 110 minutes in a Crosstown Derby for the books.
Sanz led the offensive attack for UC, namely on set pieces. The sophomore sailed five corner kicks during the match, targeting freshman Mads Tranberg (Copenhagen, Denmark) frequently. After just missing on a few scores, the set pieces finally produced when Sanz's corner strike allowed Smythe to get in position for the score. Smythe is now tied with Sanz for the team lead in total goals on the season with three. His only score last year was against XU. Sanz is pacing the Bearcats with three assists and nine total points.
Redshirt freshman Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc was impressive on the night with four saves including some huge deflections as the visitors from Norwood tried to pull ahead early. The rookie has nine saves in his last two games.

Sanz tried to bend in the far-side corner kick which the XU goalkeeper deflected, but Smythe was there for the rebound and deposited the first score of the match and his third goal of the season.

Goodall sent a back-post-bound cross into the box where Cameron Taylor challenged for the ball and headed it into the back of the net to tie the match.
