Squires carded a career-low 11-under par 69-68-68=205 to register his first tournament victory. The Bearcats finished at 14-under 283-284-283=850 to win their first team title since the 2014 Bearcat Invitational.
This year's event features a two-day, 54-hole format that includes 16 team led by host Akron.

The Bearcats are coming off a ninth-place finish at the Bearcat Invitational on Sept. 26 at Coldstream Country Club. A strong showing by UC redshirt freshman Andy Mayhew (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood High School) led the Bearcats' effort. Mayhew tied for 11th place, carding three consecutive rounds below par to finish at 5-under 70-68-70=208 in his first collegiate tournament.
// QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
On preparing to defend the team title:
"One of the goals we talked about prior to this season was making a run at defending our title at Firestone. We're going to prepare and establish a game plan for each player to have success on the course. It will come down to how well we execute during these two days."
On what the team is focusing on heading into the event:
"We're looking to see how we can improve from week one to week two. We want to clean some things up both mentally and physically. We played some nervous golf last week with it being our first event of the fall. We want to see how much better we handle our nerves during competition this week."
On the bright spot to carry away from the Bearcat Invitational:
"Andy Mayhew played some great golf and was very consistent at Coldstream last week. We've talked about needing our players who are slotted between Nos. 4-6 in the lineup to step up and help the team. Having Andy at No. 6 play so well for us at the Bearcat Invitational is a positive sign for our squad. We had stretches where the team played well overall. Now, we need to put together a complete round as a team."

// THE COURSE
Firestone Country Club has long been synonymous with golf history. The first golf tournament hosted at Firestone Country Club was The Rubber City Open in 1954. Played on the South Course, the tournament was held yearly until 1959. Notable champions like Tommy Bolt, Arnold Palmer and Tom Nieporte all staked their claim to fame on its challenging bunkers, courses and fairways. The PGA Championship came to our Firestone golf facility for the first time in 1960, then returned in 1966 and 1975 with champions Jay Hebert, Al Geiberger and Jack Nicklaus.
In the 1975 PGA Championship, Jack Nicklaus pulled out a remarkable par on the Arnold Palmer nicknamed "Monster" 16th hole, considered to be the hardest hole on Firestone Country Club's South Course. Tiger Woods also had a memorable moment when his "shot in the dark" on the 18th hole landed him a victory at the 2000 World Golf Championships NEC Invitational. These spectacular Akron golf courses are sure to draw you into their historic mystique as players wind their way around the beautifully arranged holes.
