American Athletic Conference Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Cincinnati men's soccer student-athlete Darryn Commissiong has been named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor, as announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) tallied five points on the week including two goals and an assist as the Bearcats went 1-1.
In a 2-0 home win against Green Bay on Sept. 26, the Bearcats were aggressive early when freshman midfielder Mason Volker (St. Leon, Ind./East Central) played a ball into the box to sophomore midfielder David Sanz (Santander, Spain/IE La Marina) who flipped it off to his right to Commissiong who struck the ball inside the 18 to the far post for the score.
In a 5-2 loss at USF on Sept. 30, UC, again, struck first when Sanz sent a free kick near side from about 30 yards out to the back post where Commissiong was there to head home the score during the 19th minute. In the same game, the Red & Black responded to a 2-1 deficit in the 58th minute when, off of a restart, redshirt sophomore defender Elias Helbig (Denver, Colo./East/Creighton) quickly passed to Commissiong who sailed a cross into the box where freshman midfielder Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tapped the ball into the lower left corner of the net to again tie the match.
The native Canadian's goal at USF was his second in as many matches and his third on the year, while his helper in the game was his first assist of the year.
This is not the first time the freshman has earned league weekly honors this season after being tabbed Rookie of the Week on Sept. 4.
