CINCINNATI - The week of Oct. 16-20, 2017 is scholarship impact week for the University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics.

Throughout the next four days, UCATS will celebrate the achievements of Bearcats student-athletes and the donors who provide needed support through annual giving, planned giving and endowments.

"Scholarships can make the difference between someone completing a college degree, dropping out or not even applying to college because of financial need. Raising money for scholarships remains one of our university's highest priorities and needs," said UC President Neville Pinto.

UC continues to achieve at a high level on the field and in the classroom. In the spring of 2017, student-athletes achieved a combined 3.258 term GPA, setting an all-time record. Over 70% of UC's 500-plus student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.0 or above and 12 of 17 teams posted a perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate score.

None of the success would be possible without a dedicated and driven force of donors who help student-athletes achieve the objectives and goals. Each year, athletics covers an $8-million scholarship bill and without pledged gifts and endowments, that money would come from the department's daily operating expenses.

Moving forward, UCATS is looking to increase its donor and endowment base to ensure the scholarship needs of UC student-athletes are covered in perpetuity and are independent of the day-to-day operating budget.

There are two ways to help support the $8-million needed to provide over 500 student-athletes with athletic scholarships.

The first is through an annual donation to UCATS. For more information on UCATS, visit www.GoBEARCATS.com/ucats.

The second is through scholarship endowment. Athletic endowments allow UC to provide a permanent source of income to support student-athletes. Each year, a portion of the invested fund is paid out to the University to offset the cost of a student-athlete's scholarship. Any earnings in excess of the annual distribution are used to build the fund's market value.

Endowments may be established and named beginning at $50,000, which will help to ensure that future generations of Bearcats student-athletes have the opportunity to become a part of the Cincinnati family. An endowment fund is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding which can be tailored to the donor's wishes.
