CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer scored a season-best four goals on Wednesday night in a 4-0 shutout of the Fort Wayne Mastadons at Gettler Stadium.
With the win, the Red & Black improved to 6-6-1 on the year and 4-2-1 at home. The Bearcats also moved to 6-3-1 in nonconference action. Meanwhile, the Mastadons dropped to 3-8-4 this season.
Four different Bearcats reached the scoring column with sophomore midfielder Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) offering the opening salvo. The home team followed with goals from both Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) and Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) in the first half. Freshman midfielder Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tallied another score in the second half as UC stayed in control all night and cruised to victory.
Due for an offensive outburst, the Bearcats got just that Wednesday night. Melink got the scoring started in 28th minute when he corralled the ball in front of the net following a sophomore midfielder David Sanz (Santander, Spain/IE La Marina) corner kick to put UC in the driver's seat early. The Red & Black stayed on the attack minutes later when freshman forward Commissiong got tripped up in the box, drawing a foul. Commssiong then took the penalty kick and converted for UC's second successful PK in as many matches to move ahead 2-0. The Bearcats stayed aggressive in the 42nd minute when redshirt sophomore forward Smythe went 1v1 in the box and proceeded the slip the ball past the keeper to the far side of the net.
The Red & Black scored its season-high fourth goal during the 56th minute when junior midfielder Malik Suleman (Kumasi, Ghana/Cincinnati State) corralled the ball and dished to Clarke who took the ball in stride past the defenders and finished into the near side of the net. UC continued to have scoring opportunities late that just didn't quite convert, while keeping the IPFW offense at bay to notch its third shutout of the season.
Melink's score was his first of the season, while Commisiong's tally was his fourth of the year and his first collegiate PK score. Smythe and Clarke each also added their fourth goals of 2017. Suleman's helper was his first as a Bearcat.
The Bearcats controlled the match with 13 shots, seven of which were on goal, and four corner kicks. True freshman goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md.) was strong between the pipes with a collegiate-high-tying four saves to record his first collegiate shutout.
