Maya Muldrow started that spurt with a kill, Jade Tingelhoff and Jasmine Jones had a block and Emily Azarra picked up an ace to put the Bearcats ahead. The Shockers got back in front and maintained the lead, but the Bearcats never let them get too big of a lead. Down 20-14, Tingelhoff had a kill. Three straight UC points came later on an Elly Ogle kill, Erica Kostelac kill and an attack error, making it a 22-20 set and forcing Wichita State to call a timeout. Despite two more Kostelac kills, the Shockers were able to survive the opening set.
Set 2: WSU, 30-28

After a Tingelhoff and Jones block, Azarra earned another ace before two more Bearcat kill, this time from Carly Nolan and Jones. Wichita State called a timeout with UC holding an 8-7 advantage. The Shockers regained the lead and went ahead by as much as four, 18-14, but kills from Ogle, Kostelac and Nolan tied the set at 22 each. Later on, Muldrow broke a 23-23 tie with a kill. The set was tied at 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28 before the Shockers would end it on a service error and a block.
