Box Score
CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer battled but came up short on Homecoming Saturday when it dropped a 2-0 decision to the No. 14 SMU Mustangs at Gettler Stadium.
With the loss, the Red & Black dropped to 6-7-1 on the season and 0-5-0 in American Athletic Conference play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs improved to 12-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in league action.
The Bearcats challenged 14th-ranked SMU for much of the match, but goals by the Mustangs' Garrett McLaughlin early in both halves were too much to overcome.
True freshman goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md.) was impressive for the second-consecutive match with a collegiate-best seven saves including five in the second half. On the night, UC fired eight shots including a pair on goal in what proved to be its closest scoring opportunities.
With their second game at Gettler this week, the Bearcats found themselves playing from behind after a score from the Mustangs in the sixth minute. UC had chances in the opening period including a free kick strike from sophomore midfielder David Sanz (Santander, Spain/IE La Marina) in the 26th minute that nearly got away from the SMU goalkeeper. Lawrence came up huge with a pair of saves to keep the Red & Black deficit to just one goal at the break.
Early in the second half, the Bearcats seemed poised to even the match, namely on a pair of Jensen-to-Smythe hookups that didn't quite materialize. UC was dealt a blow in the 58th minute when McLaughlin scored his second goal of the night. Now chasing the visitors from Dallas, the Bearcats were unable to find any legitimate scoring opportunities thereafter as Lawrence routinely turned away SMU strikes on goal. In the end, early-period plays from the Mustangs were enough to best the Bearcats, 2-0.
