– University of Cincinnati men's soccer erased an early-match deficit with a come-from-behind, 2-1, victory over the Cleveland State Vikings on Tuesday night at Gettler Stadium.

With the win, the Bearcats improved to 7-7-1 overall and finished the nonconference portion of the schedule undefeated at 5-0-1. The Red & Black also moved to 5-3-1 at Gettler on the year. Meanwhile, the Vikings dropped to 5-8-2 in 2017.

Freshman midfielder Mason Volker's (St. Leon, Ind./East Central) match-tying score in the 38th minute was his first goal of the season, while redshirt sophomore Ryan Melink's (Loveland, Ohio) game-winning PK in the 76th minute was his second score of the year.

Following a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes, the Bearcats fell behind when the Vikings struck first with a score in 23rd minute. Staying aggressive on offense, UC was able to add the equalizer late in the first half when redshirt sophomore defender Elias Helbig (Denver, Colo./East/Creighton) sailed the ball from distance into the box to Volker who headed the ball home to tie the match during the 38th minute. The two teams went into the break knotted at a goal apiece.

The two teams battled throughout the second half with UC controlling much of the possession. The Bearcats' aggressiveness finally paid off in the 76th minute when sophomore Daniel Oginni (Mississauga, Ontario/King's Christian Collegiate) got behind the Vikings defense and drew a foul in the penalty box. Subsequently, Melink deposited the penalty kick score to pull the Bearcats ahead, 2-1. The Red & Black stayed strong down the stretch playing a man down to come away with the victory.

UC dominated the game with 14 total shots, including eight on goal, as well as four corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md.) continued his strong play in goal with a pair of saves to bring his season total to 22 in six matches.
