Placing himself in position to repeat as individual champion, University of Cincinnati junior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) carded an opening day 8-under par 71-68=136 Monday to climb into a tie for first place at the Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Squires is tied with Akron's Elliott Grayson (8-under 71-65=136) atop the individual leaderboard after both players fired 7-under 65s during the afternoon round. Squires' second-round scorecard was bogie-free with an eagle and five birdies. It marked a career-best round for Squires and tied with former Bearcat Zack Bates for the second-lowest single-round score in school history.

Squires won the 2016 Firestone Invitational in dramatic fashion, posting an eagle on the final hole that also gave the Bearcats the team crown. He finished last year's event at 11-under 69-68-68=205.

As a team, the Bearcats rank third in the 16-team field at 3-under 291-282=573 entering Tuesday's final round. Illinois State leads the event at 12-under 282-282=564 while host Akron is second at 7-under 287-282=569.

UC sophomore Jake Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School) is tied for 12th at 1-over 75-70=145 while senior Davis Baxter (Nolensville, Tenn./Ravenwood High School) ranks tied for 25th place 3-over 74-73=147.

Final-round play begins at 8:30 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.

// QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN

On Austin Squires play:

"The key for Austin today was his patience. He stayed patient throughout the afternoon round, didn't get ahead of himself and kept battling."

On the team's overall performance:
"We are definitely making some progress from our performance at our home tournament last week. We still have some things to clean up but we had some guys hang in there and battle through it this afternoon where in years past those rounds would have gotten away from us."
